Do Officiants have to be reverends or is the term "Officiant" a general term? If it is, who qualifies for an "officiant"?

I have 2 of my friends as MCs so they feel included even though they aren’t bridesmaids. My fiancé wants to know what role a friend of his could take in to also feel included.
