We sent ours just over 9 months ahead; although our engagement is only 10 months so I would recommend a year as a good time. We just had basic info: date, location. Here is our save the date:

We gave out our save the dates last August and get married this June. We gave them out fairly early because we invited a lot of out of town guests. Here is what we put on ours:

    save the dates 1

    save the dates 2

I got married in March and sent out formal invites in December. Just a heads up that I found a lot of them took much longer to arrive and sometimes people got them confused with Christmas cards and accidentally trashed them or they were caught up in the holidays and forgot to RSVP etc... You may want to consider sending them out October/November to avoid this if you want to send out your Save the Dates later than a year before your wedding.

I would send them out in a month or two (about a year before the date) that way people can start planning holidays and whatnot around your date.

You can go really plain with just the date your names (or a picture). I've also seen some people put the venue and locations on them as well. I wouldn't do more than that though, as you'll be sending formal invites later.

We sent ours out over a year in advance because a lot of the guests invited tend to book vacations during the spring.
We put our wedding date, location, and wedding website on them and noted that as information becomes available we would be updating the website.

Our wedding is july 7 2018 and we sent out save the dates in late august 2017. So almost a full year in advance.

We wanted to give our guests a heads up on the date as many will be coming from out of town and need to book vacation time.

We sent out ours in January 2018 and we are getting married July 6,2019. I wanted to make sure that the people that don’t live in the same city new when so that if they wanted to attend they can. I just put the date and city we are getting married.

I’d probably send them out 12 months in advance. I’m a planner so I like to give everyone as much notice as possible! Our wedding is August 4, 2019 and we’re aiming to send ours out by this June.

This is our Save the Date. We kept it REALLY basic. Names and wedding date (and a fun engagement picture). I also put a sticker on the back that told guests we booked a hotel under a certain name if they wanted to reserve a room.

Really its just a friendly heads up that you'll be getting married! I'd recommend to send out the invite about 10 - 12 months in advance. Lots of notice for guests and then you can send your invites between 3 - 4 months in advance.

As it is in the summer, people tend to get busy so if you can send it out in December/ January, that would probably be better then people can make sure to have it marked off on their calendars Smiley smile
As Holly said, Date, time (if you know it), location. If people need to travel or if you are doing a destination wedding, you can include details about where you are staying for destination wedding. We got married in the mountains and had our wedding and everything at the Resort where we stayed so all our guests got the discount for their rooms as well.

Our wedding is June 1, 2019 and we are probably sending the save the dates around December/January. Maybe a bit earlier if I get impatient lol
The only information you need is Date, Location (not necessarily venue address, just city location is good), the at the bottom just say "Formal invitation to follow". Save the dates are very simple and to the point, like the name says just for the guests to save the date.
