Photography - how much?

Bianca, on February 8, 2018 at 11:18 Posted in Plan a wedding 0 37

Hey everyone!

Just wondering how much of your budget you're allocating to photography?

I'm on the cusp of booking one and just need to know if what's she's charging is reasonable. The basic price fits within our budget while their larger package is 30% over.

Hoping to get an idea on what I should do since I want to book my photography asap.

Thanks!

    Hi Emily

my photographer is donovan Bissett I absolutely love his photos. For us it was a compromise to hire him for a short amount of time, we know our photos are going to turn out amazing

UPDATE: I finally had a phone call with my potential photographer (she splits her time between Toronto and Winnipeg) and am feeling confident to book her!

I appreciate everyone sharing the details surrounding their own wedding photography! It has really helped me make an educated choice!

I'm paying $3800 for mine, 2 photographers, 10-12 hr coverage, engagement shoot included, wedding album included, all photos on USB. I originally budgeted about $5000, as when I went to a couple bridal fairs that was the cost I was quoted for the ones that captured my attention.

No problem! And I'm glad you came to a consensus. My outlook was that these are the pictures I am going to cherish so I'm going full out on photography. And I've heard of a lot of people spending around this price on photography 😊 Good luck in planning!

So I have my photographer booked for 4 hours. We decided that if we can afford it by the time the wedding comes then we will book him for another two hours. I am having an evening ceremony and reception right after so the 4 hours works for us. Our photographer is $1200 for 4 hours and $1700 for 6 hours. But I interviewed a lot of photographers before I settled on him.

Thanks! This reassurance is just what I need tbh. I spoke it over with my fiancé and he agreed that if I really want it, I should just go for it.

That's not bad of a price! Just so you know! Especially for the GTA. I am in the middle of no where in Alberta and I am spending 3250 for about ten hours. Honestly I would go with people's recommendations and reviews. I looked at my photographer's portfolio on Facebook and a friend recommended her to me. Honestly go with your gut! It's your wedding and you want to cherish these moments through a good photographer 😊

Have you been to any of the wedding shows? I’m asking because there are tons of photographers at these shows. Their all competing with each other so your likely to get a really good deal. I got two quotes one was for $895 and the second was for $1000. But you have to be at the shows to get those deals. If you just call them you get their full price.
I decided to go with my sisters: sister in law. I’ve seen her work and she’s good. She’s charging me $550.
Good luck. And hold out for a good price.

Wow, $300 an hour is definitely on the pricy side lol.

Sounds like you got a great deal for what you’re getting! Also just glad to hear that the prices I’m finding are normal across the boards.

For some reason I have $2000 A’s my number too. I think it’s just the idea that it might cost more than that is just a reality I didn’t want to face.

Could I get the info for your photographer? You describe them in a great way!

We hired a couple. We are paying $3000 for 10 hours, engagement session, and photobook. That was the middle package they had. Their pictures are amazing though. I fell in love with their pictures before meeting them, and once we met with them, I knew I wanted them. I think for the quality of their work, they are on the cheaper end. Other photographers were charging up to $300 per hour for one photographer.

Photography is so all over the place.

In my head I was like.. I want to spend $2000. No idea where I got the number from honestly though.

I then looked up photographers in/around my area and looked at their portfolios. There were some that just weren't what I was looking for (look for framing, what sort of colour editing they do, if they do any 'unique' sort of shots). Out of the ones I liked I then inquired on pricing (so many don't list it on their site!). I ended up finding my photographer for $2,000 which includes 2 photographers, engagement shoot, ALL the digital photos from the engagement shoot and wedding (we got 450 from the engagement shoot so the wedding will be nuts), then some prints and we get them for 8 hours.

It was important to me to like the photographer as well. We met with one and our personalities didn't mesh.. she was too low key where as April (who I went with) is upbeat and lovely.

I don't think I need anything more than 8 hours. I'm of the thoughts that I'm getting my hair/make up done for pictures, so she can come after that. I also don't really care about dancing pictures.. so they don't need to stay long after dinner.

I agree! We are getting married later in the evening (around 6h30). I`d like some pictures of me and the girls getting ready, first look, family pictures before/during ceremony, and then the reception. I think that 10h should be enough. There's about $450 + hst difference between 10 and 12 h!

I was debating over that too! I think it should be enough depending on what kind of moments you want to capture. We're looking to get 8 hours to cover out posed pictures outdoors pre-ceremony, then the reception, then they leave at 10pm. After that we should have all the important shots taken care of.

I think 10 hours should be plenty tho! What would the price difference be for 12 hours?

Jamie, what area are you getting married in? I assumed that most photography was going to be around this price tbh.

I'm honestly nervous about booking someone and getting awful pictures (my cousin booked a photographer for $7000 and her pictures were garbage), so I'm going into this with a grain of salt that if I know someone whose used a photographer and liked them, maybe I should just absorb the price and go with it?

    This is very difficult!

We are spending between $2,250-$2500, I`m not sure if 10h is enough yet or if I should upgrade to 12h!

My photographer was a steal at only $1200. He's a friend and is still "newer" to the wedding scene so he was much cheaper.

When we were looking at photography though, the prices were between $2000-$4000 depending on how much experience the photographer had. I managed to get most packages for around $2500-$3000, as I wanted two photographers. I'd say one would be a bit cheaper.

We knew our photography would be expensive, as we were very picky with the photographer's we chose from! This is the package we ended up with, he ended up adding on parent albums, and reduced the charge by an additional $200.00. This was one of the more reasonable quotes we got from the photographer's we contacted!

Our photographer based her packages on what she as a bride looked for. So for $1700 we got a free engagement session including 20 pictures, 2 ceremony photographers and then an assistant for the rest, all photos edited (enhanced and regular colour), full day with no time limit or extra charge. I had been looking at her work for so long because she's phenomenal nd then she released 2019 availability at 2018 rates and it fit right into our budget! I spent months doing photographer research and found a lot will charge double for the same package and quality! So do your research, talk to as many photographers as possible and talk with your fiance and figure out who will best fit you two! I know someone who is upbeat and fun but her photographer was very uptight and formal so her pictures still turned out nice but not exactly what she wanted..
