How many of you are taking their husband's surname after wedding..... If you are from Quebec, You will know, here it is not possible legally. I would need to get married officially outside Quebec region, to get my husband surname.. Since we dont have children and I have another citizenship as well....

Since we dont have children and I have another citizenship as well. I will keep my surname. Not to change all the papers. Even if I like when family have one surname. That's the way it was in my family. My mother took my fathers family name.

    Thats interesting. I didnt know that. I will be taking his last name for one reason, Its one less connection to my absolutely nutso family. His family is crazy but in a normal way. My family is no joke psychopaths and thats me being nice. Sucks as I wont get to laugh at the joke that is my name (long story short my dad wanted my middle name to be maiden but its miranda so that my name would be taylor maiden holland aka tailor made in holland which is a joke because both sides of my family have a dutch line). I have been tempted for years to change every bit of my name but last name will be a good start

    I’m not sure if you can! I’ve heard you need a lot of documentation to change your degree, such as your birth certificate so I don’t know if you would be able to.

    I also will not be taking my husbands name. It’s a silly reason, but his last name is a little TOO ethnic for me, and if I were to take it, I just wouldn’t feel like myself. I love love my name, I love that both my first and last name flow well together. I’m extremely close to my father so keeping my last name is like keeping a little piece of him with me. Our kids will take my husbands last name for sure, but he’s perfectly fine with me keeping mine!
    I also am way way too lazy to have all my legal documents changed lol

    I'm not for several reasons 1) My degrees and court decisions/papers are all under my current name and I'm so used to going by it professionally it'd seem weird to change it 2) My last name is obviously an ethnic name while my fiance's is a British name and I don't want to deal with people constantly being "surprised" when they meet me if they're expecting a white girl 3) His mom has the same first name as me so it'd be weird having two people with the exact same name in the family 4) My first and last name go really well together and 5) laziness in not wanting to go through all the paperwork lol.

    I’m not changing my name. I have two degrees under my name and feel that I have accomplished a lot professionally, and I worry about losing that! When we have kids their middle name will be my last name.

    I took my husbands surname and it's been a big adjustment tbh. It's weird making that change but I like the fact that we are a unit together - even in name.

    I took my husband’s name. I finally changed my SIN after a year of marriage! I’m a procrastinator though. For me, I had a complicated last name and his was simpler. Also, the kids thing as people have said. And, I now share the same name as a famous athlete! But, it was always something I thought I would do. I do still use my maiden name professionally, although I am also starting to transition to my married name.

    I'm planning on keeping my own name.

    We don't have kids, and if/when we do we can figure it out then.
    Plus I have a ten year passport...

    That is something...what did my partner with his previous relationship, when he had children, they gave their children 2 surnames. And today...his son...will have baby soon...and it is interesting...what surname they will give to baby...Since the son have 2 surnames and his baby mother have one. In Quebec you can not have 3 name in surname.

    I won't be changing my name. Any child or children we have will have a hyphenated surname. It's not something I believe in and he doesn't really have a strong opinion on it anyway (except that he;d never take mine - go figure).

    I am not taking my husbands name. And we have kids. His name is very common and mine isn’t. But mostly I just don’t want to do all the paperwork!

    Well, I already had his last name. I took his name years ago as we have children.
    I was 24 and freshly graduated when I changed my name, so I've always been known professionally by his name.

    I will be assuming my Husband's last name (first have to wait lie 6-8 weeks for the marriage certificate though... really back up at VitalStats in Manitoba...).

    I'm just taking his last name and moving my last name to be one of my middle names.

    Here in Manitoba we have 4 options:

    • 1. You may retain your present surname;
    • 2. You may assume your spouse's surname or common-law partner's surname;
    • 3. You may combine your present surname with your spouse's or common-law partner's surname, with or without a hyphen (it does not matter which surname you use first); or
    • 4. You may assume your spouse's or common-law partner's surname and retain your present surname as a given, middle name.

    Yeah, it's a legal name change instead of just assuming so it's a few extra steps!

    Valerie....That's true. I am living in Quebec. So, I can not take my husbands surname here. But I guess..if I would marrie him in another region of Canada. I could take his surname.

    Since I have also European passport, driving licence, credit cards, it was easier for me to keep old surname, and we dont have children.

    I'm from Québec, living in Alberta.

    We got married in Québec in September and I'll be assuming my husband's last name in the near future.

    You can get married in Québec, but the law for assuming/changing your husband's last name only applies if you live in that province. So since I am a resident of Alberta, I can assume his last name under the laws of this province.
