We sure do! We've got a trailer campsite out near the place we first met, too, so we get to go back whenever we can.
We've been engaged since my birthday (August 9th) this year. It was definitely unexpected, since he used to be very anti-marriage! We just had our first child in September as well, so we'll have our own built-in ring bearer.

I used to go on mudding trips with a few friends of mine in their jeep, so this was one of those. Only this time, my best friend, Scott, had invited along a couple friends of his from school (one of which being my now fiancé).
It kind of was love at first sight for me, which I didn't think existed. I'd been eyeing him all day, couldn't keep my eyes off him. We were all in the backwoods, with our four wheelers and Jeeps. At one point, I decided to ask Scott about him. I saw him look past me and say "we'll talk later!" Turns out, my fiancé was doing the same and asking about me.
We went for a ride on his four wheeler together, ended up talking online after we got home, had some coffee dates at Tims, and the rest is history.

    Hi Kyla Smiley heart

Wow it's amazing that you can keep these traditions for your wedding!! It makes it so much more unique, special and meaningful... especially family-wise! Smiley smile

You could also post your story in the following discussion by clicking the link:

Do you have wedding traditions in your family?

That way, other brides can see what wedding traditions you are also doing and participate.

What is your FH's hometown? His mother is organizing everything from there?

Will it be a surprise or is she keeping you posted what she is planning? Smiley laugh

Handfasting is a form of marriage or union found in Neopaganistic religions in Scotland around the 15th and 16th centuries. Essentially what we are doing is we have a marriage commissioner speak a Celtic vow and while he is doing this the patriarch of Brandon's family (his grandfather) will take a rope or ribbon or some form of tie and bind our hands together. It's not really a tradition for either of us. Neither Brandon nor I are religious so we don't want a church wedding and his family kind of put some ideas forward in other aspects (the groom will be wearing a kilt made of the family colours and matching ribbon will be used in the decorations) so we decided that if we would go our the family in that way might as well have an old fashioned wedding too. Not too mention we both wanted something different and unique and this made sense.Brandon and I live in Edmonton. Alberta and we're having the wedding in his hometown. His mother called like 3 weeks ago and informed us she was planning a wedding for when we came down at Xmas hahaha. It's cheaper to have it there anyways so it just made more sense.

Hi Kyla Smiley heart I'm so glad you two have found each other and are really happy together!

I had never heard of the handfasting tradition before! Could you tell us more about it? Smiley smile You could comment in the discussion below to tell what it is:

Do you have wedding traditions in your family?

You say that you're having your wedding hours away from where you live, is it because you're having your wedding in your hometown?

Thank you! I thank the stars everyday that I found him. They are all over the place honestly. My mother in law is having one of her friends (a wedding planner) help with a bunch of the decorations and so far I've been getting mixed stories. It's all over the place and because I live hours away I can't do anything but ask questions. Venue has been taken care of as far as I know. His family is Scottish so we've decided to have a tradition Scottish wedding with a handfasting. It's perfect considering Brandon and I aren't much for traditional weddings.

    Hi Kyla Smiley heart

Wow this is so sweet! I can't imagine why you were both too shy to make the first moves! Luckily your flatmate got involved and you both turned out to be the right person for each other Smiley catface

It's so great and brave of you to have proposed to him first! I really admire that! It's too bad it didn't turn out the way you expected but I'm super happy to know that everything turned out the right way in the end and that you are finally getting married!! Smiley ring Congrats!!

How are your preparations going? Where are you at? Have you found your venue yet?

Haha I read Lyndsey's and omg that is awesome! It's nice that things like accidents can bring people together when you see so many things like a simple accident be taken the wrong way. Well they weren't completely out of the ordinary, they just not my run of the mill dates hahaha. Our first date was pretty ordinary. We met at a Tim Hortons for coffee and talked for 2.5 hours. He did most of the talking and I listened. After they closed we went outside and talked for another half hour before I drove him home (he's in the military so I drove him back to the base). I asked if he wanted a second date and he said sure. If you ask him what he thought he tells you that I was an arrogant asshole and I thought he was your run of the mill nerd living in his mothers basement. Second date went pretty normal (family guy and Doritos) and ended with me telling him "if your gunna kiss a girl, then just do it". He didn't. Our third date was the best. My roommates bf made a fancy dinner for them and when I said that Brandon was coming over before leaving town. He fished up two plates sat us down in front of them and then they went out for dinner. They came back two hours later to find me and Brandon talking on the couch. I got so yelled at for not making a move haha they told me they had better not come home to us on the couch and then left a second time for a movie. Simply so I wouldn't get yelled at we moved off the couch and after another hour of nervous chatter he finally kissed me. She was a blessing and brought us closer together. And actually...I proposed. I was 7 months prego. We went shopping and I made the bargain that he'd lend me the money and he could have the money stashed in the pantry. He agreed and I bought an engagement ring. That night I got down on my knee (which isn't easy with a huge belly sticking out). It did not go how I wanted it to. 5 months later her proposed in turn and I cried even though I knew he'd boughten the ring. I proposed in October and he proposed in March. It was beautiful.

And OMG this is so sweet of him to have come to see you every single night at the hospital besides all the work he had going on! And to propose like that... saying he wanted to be with you no matter what Smiley heart I think this is the most touching proposal I've heard so far!! I'm sure you two will build a wonderful family!

It's so amazing that your mom and friends can help you with all that! I totally understand how hard it can be to organize everything while in school. It's great that you have all these people around you! Smiley heart

I met my finance as he was my bff's step brother. Didn't get to know him until I was 23. Dated him when his Mom set us up ... she drove a shuttle service and my car was in for repair. We were both just fresh out of relationships so it wasn't the right time and ended things. Fast forward 20 years... reconnected thru Facebook... dated three years ago and with my Mom being really sick and needing my help.. i wasn't ready for anything serious. She passed away last fall. We reconnected this year and we both knew it was the right time.. got engaged in the summer. Can't wait to marry him.

I had been dating his best friend, even before that when I first met my 'fiance', I nearly went for him. I proceeded to date the friend and wound up setting my friend up with his. I remember being so jealous when they started dating. After six months of dating things went sour so we broke up and my 'fiance' still wanted to be friends even though I wasn't in the group now. After a summer of him helping me we wound up dating and now we're over a year in! The reason I said 'fiance' is because we aren't engaged yet but I know the plan, it's during my commencement when I graduate high school. I couldn't be happier!!!

My fiancé and I met online in early December of 2014 and I knew instantly he was the one and that is fall for him. Literally! I fell outside while talking on the phone with him and had to be taken to hospital. He stayed up all night texting me to make sure I was okay. Over the next few days we had three dates before he left on holidays. Haha to say in the least they were out of the ordinary. We spent the next few months spending every moment we could together. But after four short months together we hit a bit of a snag. We discovered we were expecting. We talked it over and decided that we would make things work and see how things went. By the time out daughter was born the following December (just 13 days after our one year) we were engaged and it was like we'd always been together. He is my best friend and my confidant! I couldn't love anyone more then I love him (our daughter not included hahaha)

Sorry for the late reply Emilie!

The night that Dennis and I met, when we got into the car accident, we exchanged insurance information but after more discussions, we decided that we wouldn't go through insurance and he quoted me a good price to pay him for a mechanic to fix it, (yes, the accident was my fault Smiley sad lol ). After I came up with the money for him, I dropped it off to him at his house, and when I left, I sent him a text message saying thank you for being so nice about the whole situation, and he replied with no problem, how could I possibly get mad at someone so pretty. My heart melted instantly as corny as that sounds. From there, we went on a few dates, and quickly found out that we had some mutual friends, and quite a few of the same interests as well. I think that Dennis and I have a few things that make us special, but the first thing that comes to mind is how supportive we are of eachother. About 7 years ago, 2 years into our relationship, I was involved in a freak accident, that caused a huge tree to come flying at me in a storm, and breaking my back. I was in the hospital for 2 months and had 2 surgeries on my back, but I can say that although Dennis was working 13 hour days and sometimes 7 days a week, he made sure that he would come see me in the hospital every single night to spend time and check if I needed anything. It might not sound like much, but the amount of support he showed me made a huge impact on my life and I knew that he was the one I wanted to be with for the rest of my life! I ended up having to get a 3rd and final surgery on my back, but before the date came for that he proposed, and explained that although he knew everything was going to be fine, that he wanted me to know that he is going to be with me no matter what. I know that our future will be great, and hopefully not too long after the wedding we will try and expand our family with kids. I am currenty a full time student in the dental hygiene program and he is working full time as a diesel mechanic and he makes sure that he can support me as much as possible so that I can graduate this December before the wedding. We are plannig on giving a combined speech at the wedding, but our story will definately be explained in a funny way since it really is quite the funny story to tell. As far as my wedding preparations, they are ok, but still need to do some more planning. It's difficult while in school, but thank god for moms and friends that help! Because I am in school, it's hard to afford things like a wedding cake, so my mom is going to make a fake cake for me, which I am so thankful for.

Dennis and I met by accident on May 9th of 2009. When I say by accident, I actually mean that we met by accident, as I crashed my truck into his in a Tim Hortons parking lot! Dennis likes to tell people that it was love at first sight because I got lost in his eyes, but I tell people that I stuck around because he told me his dad was a cop lol. From there, we started growing up together, getting new jobs, buying a house, moving in together and getting our dog Buddy. Dennis proposed to me on Saturday September 12th (my dads birthday) when we got back home from having a date night.

Hi Simone! Smiley heart I think silk flowers are a great alternative. For the look you're going for, I don't think you need a lot of plants anyways, eleghant feathers and pearls would also look gorgeous in your Gatbsy decor.

I wasn't really excpecting anything at first and it took a few months before we actually decided to form a couple. When we started talking more seriously about our feelings and the kind of futures we wanted, that's when it really became serious and knew we wanted to be together. Being pregnant was also definitely an awesome surprise and every day I feel even more in love with him

I guess after a few months seeing that he was so persistant - even if i was ignoring him sometimes - he made me understand that we had a great connection and i was just fighting against it. it took me a whyile to understand but i think the situation was starting to hurt him and i needed to make a choice. it was kind of an easy one when i think about it now and i never regretted making this decision. now more than ever, i know we will always be there for one another.
