What style wedding cake?

Taylor, on November 21, 2016 at 09:52 Posted in Wedding reception 0 25

Hello everyone! I was just curious about what style wedding cake you are doing! I'm torn between doing an actual cake or a bunch of cupcakes stacked like a cake! Thinking maybe smaller cake and cupcakes but don't know if that will be too much!

I'm not the biggest cupcake fan... so we're just getting a small 2 tier cake (since there's a huge dessert buffet with our dinner)This is the design pic our bakery is working from (but with turquoise ribbon)

I like the idea of having a wedding cake but using cupcakes at each place setting.

I am also thinking of a small top cake as a keepsake for our anniversary and cupcakes or push up cakes and cake pops. There are diet concerns for some and although I love the smooth look of fondant but it's definitely the thickness that I am thinking may be too much. Hope you all find that perfect cake! We have to get a couple gluten free ones as well because my FH's aunt is gluten free!

I'm not a fan of cupcakes really, but that's just me! I like the idea of a cake display in front of the head table. Adds another decor element! If budget is an issue then a smaller cake for display with a sheet cake in the back a great idea!!!!!!!!

Haha well maybe you could eat half for your 6 month anniversary and half for your 1 year anniversary? Smiley winking

We weren't quite sure what happened with serving the cake but it was not on time. They asked us when we first sat down for dinner if we wanted the sheet cake pre-sliced and we said yes. We were running a bit behind schedule because the dinner service took longer than expected but we told them right before that we were about to cut the cake so they could get the other slices ready to bring out but it just seemed like they were never bringing it. I asked multiple times where it was after we cut the cake, my mom asked and they were just like "it's coming." They ended up serving it at the same time as our late snack (apparently poutine and cake go together!) and at that point some people had left and I think others just didn't realize it had finally been served. The people who did get cake said it was delicious but I wish it had been better served!

We are thinking of doing this as well! I am hoping we might be able to get some gluten free cupcakes in the mix as well since we have some guests with this dietary concern.

Thank you! We actually did have quite a bit leftover (there were some issues with serving the cake) and we were able to save the entire top tier as well as a bunch of extra slices! We gave the extra slices to family and the top tier is currently in the freezer at my aunt's house and we'll pick it up next time we're in town! Haha

We did a small 2 tier cake and then sheet cake. We're not big cupcake people and I like that you can layer more flavour with a cake. (We did two flavours: cherry chocolate and salted caramel. The salted caramel had layers of caramel cake with a caramel buttercream frosting layer and a chocolate ganache layer in between the cake layers. The cherry chocolate had chocolate cake with alternate layers of chocolate ganache and cherry filling.)

    Our Cake

I know that doing a small display cake and then cupcakes underneath has become very popular!

Do you have any ideas on what you want your design to look like?

No problem!! Everyone always says you need a second tier because you eat it on your 1st anniversary but my FH doesn't really like cake or sweets at all.... So it wasn't worth the extra cost for us! The cupcakes are a big hit now a days to!
