Wedding Videography - Keep or Skip?

Brittany, on September 19, 2022 at 15:26 Posted in Plan a wedding 0 37

Do you plan on having a videographer at your wedding? Or do you plan to skip it entirely and just get photos done?

For myself and my fiancé it was a long-time of going back and forth. When we initially started planning and saw the costs of them we decided it was a bit out of budget so ultimately it was a no. This was back when we were planning a wedding at The Whitewood Barn where the wedding was going to be on the more expensive side of weddings.

After a few months we decided to go back to what we always wanted, a small wedding in the mountains. Don't get me wrong, it is still a pricey wedding for only 40 people - but because we were having a smaller wedding we really wanted to catch the special moments - and what moment is more special than the ceremony itself?

So I looked around and found an amazing company that does videographer just for the ceremony (yes this is a thing)! I only found out about it recently and it made me really excited that the most important part of our wedding will forever be professionally video taped and edited to perfection.

Overall - we decided to keep this tradition and I can not wait for the end results!

Wow that's an incredible price! Unfortunately, I am getting married in Northern Canada (Yellowknife) and I can't even find a basic photo package for less than $1800. I am definitely going to keep looking into it but if it's not in the budget we might have to do without it.

I love the idea of having certain things on video (the vows, walking down the aisle, the rings), but I also feel like those moments can be captured in photographs, too? I don't know I'm definitely going to have to keep thinking and figure it out. Ultimately, I think it will come down to budget.

My fiance and I have a smaller budget as well. I don't really care for photos or videos after the ceremony time. I don't want photos of me eating or getting drunk! I think instead I would love to put those disposables cameras and get them developed later on, I think it would be so much more fun.

Since we are having what is considered a micro-wedding we only opted for photography for 2 hours during the ceremony and for photos of the wedding party, family and couple portraits. Then we decided to book a 2 hour session for sunset the next day in the mountains at sunset and so that now put us at about the $600 in total for photography.

I really sat and thought about it for months about the videography, I then posted in my local wedding buy and sell pages asking for peoples work and their prices to just do maybe 1.5 hours of videography for the ceremony and I ended up finding this amazing couple who just got into videography this summer but they have been photographing for years and their work is phenomenal. Saw a couple of the videos they made this summer and decided to book with them! With travel because they are about an hour away, editing and 1.5 hours of them taping us it came to just under $500.

I really wanted to capture the ceremony. I would love to have video of my dad walking me down the aisle, the raw emotions of my FH saying his personal vows to me and me saying mine to him. So in the end it was the perfect price.

In total, for a Banff Alberta wedding we are only spending $1100 on BOTH photography and videography.

As for worried about the little mistakes, like mispronouncing something, a joke is being told or what ever, you are going to look back and laugh at those moments with your FH and be glad you got it on camera. To me, it shows peoples are nervous and goofy and all around the real moments as a couple which is what I want to capture!

My FH and I are still going back and forth on this one. On the one hand, a video would be a fun thing to look back on and we'd be able to see exactly how everything happened instead of just stills. On the other hand, our budget is quite small and I'm not sure it would be worth it. I keep thinking, "If something goes wrong in the ceremony, a video makes it permanent, whereas a photo will only keep the things that went right."

We definitely want a wedding videographer. I have been to weddings where the bride and groom regret not having a video of their day.

I was going back and forth on the idea of a videographer as well. Seems like a nice but not exactly necessary expense. However I was extremely fortunate and won a gift card to an already affordable videographer at a wedding show I went to last month so now I'm able to fit it in our budget!
My advice I keep saying to everyone getting married is go to every wedding show within your general area and enter every contest available. I've actually won so much this way!

That's the truth! I found a wonderful photographer who will give us 6 hours for $1500 all in. My DJ is doing it for $1050.
The perks of getting married in February. But I had a lot of outrageous quotes.

It definitely is a pricey vendor, but because not all business are on Wedding Wire, I ended up making a Facebook post in three different pages for wedding items and vendors. I said exactly what I wanted in the post and what my budget was and I found a ton of people who were within or below budget for what I was looking for! Although some people prefer the whole day taped, I specifically wanted only the ceremony and some shots after to add in. I found a couple in Calgary and for travel, videoing and editing afterwards we are paying a little less than $500.

Planning to skip videography but planning to pay for high quality photos and then make a wedding photo album. I find videographers tend to be over budget for a lot of people even though it seems to be more of a popular thing.

If you don't use traditional wedding vendor directories (like Weddingwire), you'll find a lot of vendor options that are no where close to that price. I have found videographers in Toronto on Facebook and Kijiji that charge less than that for a full day service.

2800 just for ceremony? I am sorry but that is a RIP OFF. I found a couple who is based in Calgary. They just recently stepped foot into videography this year and their work is amazing. Each video I watched I was in awe and the shots were breath taking - it was a plus because they also shot a wedding at where we are getting married and that pretty much sealed the deal for me. The originally do photography and that work is amazing too! So yeah! I am very excited Smiley smile

How in the world did you find some one for 500?

I have talked to a couple of videographers and they want like 2800 or more for the ceremony only 🙄🙄

If all you care about is reliving the memory, then it wouldn't be hard to DIY it. But if you care for the video to look cinematic and polished like a short film, it would be really difficult to do yourself and a huge ask from friends if you're not paying them.

Oh this is a tough question. We have a lot of friends in theatre and film so I’m hoping we can ask for their advice on how to DIY this. I would love a videographer to capture the day. I’m especially fond of the ones who edit a 90 second highlight reel overnight so it can be shared on socials, but that is a huge amount of work so I understand the pricing. Lots to think about!

Definitely check vendors who may offer just the ceremony! You will be surprised Smiley smile For example, for 2 hours to get the footage they need, the editing and final product I am only paying $500 and that's with travel because they are an hour away from the ceremony location.

I would have loved to have a videographer but we were on a very tight budget and there was no way to fit it in. My aunt took a lot of videos on her phone and has sent them all to me so I'm glad I have those to look back on!

That is awesome! I am super happy you got that. Since we only needed the videographer for maximum an hour, we saved ALOT in costs.

One thing I will say for others who are camera shy - video is more subtle than photo in that regards. As the subject, you're expected to look into the camera for pictures but in video, you're not supposed to into the camera.

This is a great way to include video on a budget. Having someone just capture things like the ceremony (arguably the most important part) instead of spending a whole day there watching you get ready and eat food etc will still yield you a great video without the heavy costs.
