Potential Postal Strike and Wedding Invitations

Allison, on September 20, 2018 at 16:37 Posted in Plan a wedding 0 17

The one time Canada Post MIGHT strike is the one time I actually have to snail mail Invitations and Save the Dates. My wedding is not until next year and the strike may resolve by then/not even happen but I'm wondering if anyone has any back-up plans to send Save the Dates/invites? Anyone just going the electronic invite route since it's the 21st century? Smiley tongue

I feel like options like FedEx and UPS would be more costly than regular mail and it's not feasible to hand-deliver every single invitation since guests live out of town.

Most of our Save the Dates will probably be emailed anyways, The odd one will be sent as a paper copy.

I think last time they went on strike there was still limited service, it was just once a week.

We did evites for save the dates (and ended up doing it for the invitations too).

You could always call/email some people and let them to expect the save the date once the strike is over.

Yeah, I saw something about the strike on Facebook yesterday, just that they voted in favour. I think the 26th is when they might strike unless they reach an agreement.

I'm glad I saw this post, I would have never known and then probably had a panic attack... Haha. I've looked into it now... I'm just going to send them out Sunday (in 3 days)... so they are hopefully all out and mostly delivered by the 26th. I'd rather have them out a couple weeks early than late!! My fiance and I sat and stuffed all the envelopes last night Smiley laugh

Yeah, probably 75% of our total guests are out of town. We'll send the majority electronically but for some older/less computer savvy crowd, we'll send paper ones.

Ah cool! I knew of the Ukrainian Christmas and Epiphany before (Jan 6th) sometimes called little Christmas I think. Makes sense there is an Ukrainian Easter too!

For us the only reason we are doing save the date cards is because we have a lot of out of town guests (pretty much my fh whole family and 95% of his friends) and a lot of guests who need decent heads up of the date to be able to book it off well in advance because of the types of jobs they have. If most of your guests are within the same city/town as you and don’t need the extra time to be able to book the date off I wouldn’t worry about save the dates.
That aside, I wouldn’t worry about the possible strike. It won’t last long so you will still have plenty of time to get those out to guests even if they do go on strike.

Oh ya, I guess I could also send out the STD's at Orthodox Christmas as well Smiley tongue (Jan. 7th)

(I say Orthodox to be "correct" but I celebrate Ukrainian Christmas in January and Ukrainian Easter in April/May. Christmas is always on the 7th of January but Easter sometimes falls on "English" Easter.)

I've never paid much attention to Canada post's operations since I never have to mail things Smiley tongue but I can't imagine it's the first strike to happen.

I have a similar timeline for send outs. My Save the Dates will hopefully be sent around Christmas time or early in the new year. A few of them would be printed but majority being electronic. I'm thinking to send invites around the same time you are (I didn't know there was an Orthodox Easter until you mentioned it) because I want guests to have more time if needed or if I need to send B-lists invites if I get a certain number of "No's"

You guys are right, it'll probably be over before I even have to worry about it. Plus in this day and age with the internet, it's not hard to send things out in an email, even if it may be less than ideal. If the strike did affect things, I'm pretty sure guests would be understanding of it.

I've had my parents and future sis-in-law reach out offering to help invites if I needed it, which is awesome, but I probably don't even need to worry about it. Smiley winking

I think that they strike every other year? I used to work in the mail room at my place of employment and the last strike I encountered lasted almost 2 weeks... It was pretty built up. As for the options like FedEx and UPS - ya that is like $8-$10 a letter compared to what should only cost $0.85 a letter by Canada Post....

When will you be sending out your STD's and Invitations? My wedding also being October 2019 I was thinking Save the date's would go out as a Christmas card duo (e-vite though)and then the actual invitations would go out roughly around Orthodox Easter Smiley tongue (April 28th) so that it would give the out of town guests a 5 and a bit month notice instead of the standard 3-4.

We already send our save the dates, wedding also next year (June) and don't plan to send invites till February-ish. I'm pretty confident that any issues will be resolved by then. Don't worry too much! If it comes down to it you may have to do an e-save the date but for invites I think you're fine!

I wouldn’t stress over it. You don’t need save the dates and your wedding is way off. Any strike will be long over and that’s if one even happens.

We mailed our our invitations last week to make sure people got them. And if a strike does happen and lasts more then a couple weeks we can just email people for their RSVPs.

It’s not that big of a deal.

Since your wedding is not until Oct of next year I really wouldn't worry too much. I really doubt it will take long to resolve! You likely will not be sending out your save the dates until the new year anyways I imagine. And if worst comes to worst, if you absolutely had to send the save the dates and the invitations by mail that would be ok too!

I wouldn't bother with save the dates. or would just send some texts/email messages (but we aren't doing them anyways. its an extra cost I don't feel is necessary).

for invites. if Canada post is on strike. as much as I hate the idea of an e-vite. its what I would do. and hand deliver invites that I can.
