Planning on a student budget

on February 2, 2018 at 00:15 Posted in Plan a wedding 0 11
Anyone ever planned a wedding for 150-200 people on a low student budget? I am trying to figure out which catagories I can cut out and not pay too much for.

My most important things are the dresses, photography and outdoorsy area.

Also, I know everyone says it's very untraditional- but is it really thatcrazy to use an iPod and speakers instead of a band / DJ? Anyone ever done this?

We also got married when we were students and we had to work hard for a beautiful wedding. Now it is easier to find a job and it is paid better, in our time it was very difficult.

Yes. It is hard, but I’ve made mine very DIY to cut costs. A bridesmaid is making the cake as a gift. We are doing our own food, and I made all of the decorations by hand. If you shop around to get good deals on dresses you’ll be golden. We also had to go without a lot. But we’re making it special. Our photos are also being done by a friend for a discount.

It's hard to have a good wedding, especially if you're a student on a low budget. But i'll try to help you out with music, here is an article about picking right music: https://thehandwritten.com/simple-tips-good-review-music/ . Happy marriage!

Thank you! We are getting married at asessippi ski resort in manitoba. The scenery alone is beautiful so i dont have to buy too many decorations. We lucked out signing into a contract 2 years ago so it was very affordable at the time. Our photographer is katelyn-moore photography. In the last 2 years she has really blown up her business. When we hired her she was trying to build a clientele so her prices werent huge.

Yay I'm happy I'm not the only one who decided on fancier ring in years to come. My FH thinks I'm crazy but willing to go with it. Who is your photographer- because 800 with travel is really a great price! Your wedding sounds cute !

Im a student! And so is my FH. I bought my flowers from budgetbride.com. got all of my flowers for 300 dollars and best part? Theyre fake! But look so beautiful. We decided to cut costs and bought me a simple yellow gold wedding band for 150. My FH said in a couple of years he will buy me a fancier second band so i can have a trio. Our photographer is an out of school student. Her price was 800 with travel. We had her do our engagement photos so we could see her style. Im ordering donuts from a bakery for dessert, much cheaper than cake and cupcakes. We were doing an ipod for music but then our venue decided not to let us use their sound system. My FHs parents decided to pay for a DJ. I found one for 1100. We are also doing cash bar. We agreed we just cant foot the bar bill.
We decided to have tacos for dinner. Came to a nice price of 17 bucks a person.
Its hard to cut costs in certain places, but with some good digging you can manage it.

I believe it all depends on what’s most important to you and your fiancé. Depending on your number of guests, there’s lots of options near where you live to host a wedding on a student budget.

Other people have hit the nail on the head.

    1. Keep your guest list small and intimate.

    2. Food/alcohol are going to be your biggest cost. Depending on the vibe you're going for, you can have a cash bar, no bar or BYOB. I also had considered asking guests to do a potluck and bring a dish of food instead of giving us a gift. You could do that if you're going for the small and intimate vibe.

    3. Venue is something that varies greatly and they tend to book early. You can find halls that are basic and you do all your own decor but it'll save you money, or you can do it on a family property.. however keep in mind you might need to rent tables/chairs/serving wear etc.

    4. You can definitely make your own play list with an iPod, I've seen it done. Just make sure you have good speakers and designate someone to be responsible for picking them up if rented and dropping them off. I'd also ask someone if they can just keep an eye on the list to make sure it all goes smoothly.

    5. You can cut out things like cake, favours and find clothing for cheaper. Decor is something you can spend big on or spend small on depending on the vibe you're going for as well.

Hey there. How many guests are you hoping to invite? Keeping your guest list small is the single most impactful way to decrease your costs. Fewer people to feed, fewer tables and chairs and linens, fewer centerpieces...

We are not hiring a DJ. We are downloading songs from Spotify and playing it from a laptop, hooked up to a sound board. We are having a couple people take turns to ensure everything runs smoothly.

The biggest expense for a wedding is food and alcohol. You can have an evening ceremony and serve appetizers or dessert instead of a dinner. You can do a cash bar or just not serve alcohol to eliminate that expense.

Flowers are also pricey. You can make bouquets yourself, or skip the bouquets and have bridesmaids carry something else (or nothing at all).

Your profile says that you are getting married in May 2018. If that is true than you really need to hurry up and book stuff as most venues and vendors for this year are probably booked already.

You can save a lot of money by having your wedding on property owned by a family member or friend. Make a lot of your own decorations. Make your wedding a potluck so that you do not foot the bill for all the food. If you know someone who is an officiant and will give you a discount, approach them.

We used an iPod and speakers for our wedding and it was great! We got to really personalize the music choices and save a ton of money.
