Mother of the Bride

Kelly, on June 5, 2018 at 15:23 Posted in Wedding fashion 0 12

Where are good places to get plus size Mother of the Bride dresses? This is tough because my mom hasn't worn dresses in a super long time. I told her she didn't have to, she could wear pants if that was more comfortable, but she said no. My mom is a confident person, but my wedding seems to be unearthing her discomforts with her body. She has said things like "don't make me be in pictures" or, "maybe nobody will look at me". I wanted both of my parents to walk me down the isle, and when I told my mom that, she seemed more concerned that I was making her the center of attention she didn't want, than asking for her support because she means the world to me.

ANYWAYS...had anybody gone through something like this with their mom? I want to take her dress shopping and find something that she feels amazing in. I'm just scared that she's going to feel self conscious, and I don't want that.

Have your mom look at evening dresses at department stores! My mom found so many more good dress options once she just started looking for formal dresses and not dresses that are specifically designated as "mother of the bride" dresses!

That's a good idea to call shops ahead to make sure they have the right sizes. Will do. Thanks

Check out online. Azazie.com lets you try on the outfits at home first before buying. Or even your local facebook wedding page. My mom found a unused dress on their for cheap!

You should urge her to get a dress now... my mom's took 6 months to come in.

Try googling plus size stores. For example, there's a place in Vancouver called Lucy's, and they have everything from casual to formal clothes, but they are all in size 14+...

My FMIL is the same way, she keeps commenting she wants to lose 30 lbs by the wedding, and wants to buy her dress just before Christmas (wedding in January)... but I'm concerned she's not gonna make any healthy changes, and then complain when it's closer to the wedding.

My mom had similar concerns about dress shopping. Especially when it came to dress sizes (one shop a 14 fit fabulous and in another a 20 was still too small).
If you want to start off on a positive note I would call a bridal salon or 2 and see if they also carry mother of the bride dresses that are plus size. And either book an appointment or go when it won't be busy so you have someone who is probably a pro at dealing with these issues. I found they were great at pulling pieces that were flattering where they should be and take focus away where the concerns are. After that you can go shop around and the self consciousness is definitely lower.
Also introduce her to spanx. My mom has decided that they will be her confidence booster on the wedding day.

Try the Bay and online shops like Asos and Lane Bryant and LindyBop and ModCloth.

I’m plus sized and shopping can be a pain but I’m located in Toronto so we may have more options.

Online shopping works bc it allows for variety and the comfort of trying on clothes at home.

    Good luck with your search!

My mom found hers at a consignment shop. It was a designer dress and in good condition for a very reasonable price! We had also looked at Laura, winners, the bay, addition Elle (they had some pretty lacy ones! And even more online than in store) and bellissima (not sure if that’s a chain though).

My mom is being the same way ! I feel horrible about it especially because her weight problems are due to the medications she's on. She tries so hard. And she has been putting off dress shopping because she wants to lose "x" amount of pounds before she even looks. I've been trying to be as encouraging as I can because it breaks my heart that she feels like that about herself . Probably the best place to go would be a David's bridal !! They have such a virety that there is likely something stunning she can find ! 😁 That's where I've been trying to direct my mom as well

My mom has been VERY hard on herself for my wedding. She's a gorgeous lady, but doesn't feel that way which is tough to hear sometimes.

We found a dress, but I'm pretty sure she hates it and has been worried how she'll look in pictures. I just keep telling her she looks awesome. Not much else to do unfortunately.
