Invitation Wording

Ashleigh, on October 4, 2017 at 12:30 Posted in Plan a wedding 0 18
Hi Ladies! I'm sure we have some grammar police in here. I'm hoping you can weigh in on some options for the wording on our invitations. The reception will be Cocktails and H'ordeurves only (no seating plan or DINNER), we want to make sure our guests are aware of this without it coming across as tacky. The event will be from 7:00 pm - 11:00 pm. I'm also debating on whether or not to sneak in the end time on the invitations or just have that on an 'order of events' sign at the Reception. Let me know what you think. Please change anything around, these are just some options I thought of. Hopefully this will 'copy and paste' in a readable format.
-Please join us for Cocktails and H'ordeurves after the ceremony.
-Cocktails and H'ordeurves will be served after the ceremony. -Cocktails and H'ordeurves will be available after the ceremony.
-Cocktail and H'ordeurve Reception to follow.

Update!!!! We love how these turned out. We got them printed recently. We are definitely ahead on this task. We have about 3 months until we would like to send them out. I blacked out our last names and the venue name/address.

I like Lisa's response but I would include:

    Ceremony at 7 pm

Cocktails & Hors D'oeuvres to be served at 7:30 pm. Dancing & Celebrating to follow until 11pm

Since there will be a dj and dancing, I think it Is perfectly fine to use hors d'oeuvres reception to follow.

My only concern is that the ceremony is at 7, the drinks and hors d'oeuvres are after the ceremony, 730ish. I wouldn't want to confuse people and have them showing up at 7:30.

I think Coctails and Hors d'oeuvres to follow, is good. Will there be any dancing?

Be careful about mentioning “Reception to follow” if you’re not having a standard reception, as people will likely expect dinner/dancing/etc. We only had dinner at a restaurant, so put “Dinner to follow”, so guests were aware that they would be eating, but that there wouldn’t be music and dancing.

    Oooh, I love grammar policing!

"H'ordeurves" is most typically spelled "hors d’oeuvres" but perhaps this is a regional difference where you are located?

"Cocktails" and "hors d’oeuvres" do not need to be capitalized unless they are the first word of a sentence.

I would not list an end time on an invitation. Your venue/dj will help make it clear to your guests when it is time to go. If you want to spread the word this might be something to include on a wedding website or in a program. If you list it in the wedding program I would list it as either "last call" or "last dance" rather than "end time".

I would also add in if its a cash bar, toonie bar, or open bar.

Thank you! Darn auto-correct has me believing the incorrect spelling.

Ah-ha. Yes we could eliminate the mention of "cocktails" altogether.

One quick fix, it’s “hors d'oeuvres”. And I’d go with the first option of “Please join us for cocktails and hors d'oeuvres after the ceremony”
