How old does the old item have to be?

Carine, on June 6, 2022 at 10:21 Posted in Wedding fashion 0 41

Hello Brides,

So many questions, I'm over thinking right now.

Does anyone know how old does the item have to be for it to be considered the something old?

My mom who's no longer with us has a ring that she has had for as long as I've known her, and in the middle it has a blue sapphire, it would be perfect for the something old and blue, kill two birds with one stone type deal, Pun intended, or does it all have to be separate items for it to count? I'm assuming the ring is at least 40 years old or 45 if she's had it since my brother was born.

Have any of you combined these popular superstation traditions?

I love that, not only do you have something old and blue but it was passed down and has so much meaning. That's how I feel about my moms ring, I think it's old enough, and blue and one of her favorite items to wear. I don't have the heart to wear anything of hers because I once wore her gold bracelets and lost on and the guilt and sadness I felt. This will be a short term time frame so I'm less scared.

I kind of said to my FMIL that I had everything but the borrowed and she offered. I would just go around to anyone and hint you need something borrowed and see what is offered Smiley winking

I think that anything that is old to you would do the trick. I don't think there's any hard and fast rule about the number of years it has to be. I have a handkerchief that belonged to my aunt who passed last September and it has blue stitching as well so I have a two for one item. I believe it may have belonged to my grandmother first.
I'm having a hard time with the borrowed one. Do you just randomly ask a friend or relative to lend you something? I was thinking of asking my mother to lend a piece of jewelry but feel uncomfortable asking.

I am so very sorry for the loss of your mom. Using her ring as your 'old and blue' is ideal.
Your wedding outfit - all that you've described - sound beyond perfect; each piece having it's special place and meaning... huge congrats on your big day!! And the very best wishes for the lifetime to come Smiley heart

I definitely think the emotion behind using the ring is genuine and I am a thought that counts kind of girl. I love when you can bring something from a lover one with you on your special day. Do you have your 6 pence for your shoe?

The necklace that I'll be using as my "something old" is just from 9 years ago! I haven't even thought about an age-rule, but it's old enough to me that I'm going with it Smiley smile

Thanks Rebecca, I'm 40 so I feel like her ring is perfectly old enough Smiley tongue since she's had if for as long as I can remember. I'm not much for weddings but being proposed to and actually having a wedding I'm falling for every girls dream. I was at a point in my life that I would never get married, and wanted to get married but then saw three failed marriages between my mom, dad and brother so as much as I would have loved to get married it wasn't in the cards... I was wrong my prince came and proposed and now I'm loving every moment but I am letting it get to me and I am overthinking things. Thanks to Wedding wire I have brides bringing me back to earth. lol

    Smiley heart

This is so beautiful. I think we read too much into traditions sometimes and anything that was used by our mothers or anything like that should be considered whether it be old blue or borrowed. in some perspectives it could possibly even be new because its new to you.

you do what feels right in your heart, its your day, if anyone disagrees with you on the choices you and or your husband to be have made they will just have to deal with it Smiley smile

from my knowledge vintage is considered to be 20+ when referring to jewelry and clothing if that helps

My moms dress was never preserved properly so I ended up cutting a piece of her dress to someday added a piece of it to my bouquet or to underneath my dress, to have her that much closer to me on my special day that she won't get to see.

I’ve never heard how old something has to be specifically. I’m using lace from my mums 1972 wedding veil on my veil so it’ll be 50 years old this year!
Something borrowed (my mums earrings), blue will be my shoes, and new would be my dress Smiley smile

Nice to know there are a few of us!! I'll be 50 by the time the day arrives, my FH is 2 years younger.
I agree to a point about parents, to a certain extent. Only parent left between the 2 of us is his dad (and step mom who we both love).

My FH would have loved to elope, but this is my first (and an older bride as well) so he's happy to have a ceremony and such.

I think a combined option is amazing! like you said, get those 2 birds stoned at once right Smiley winking

Sometimes it can be hard to manage all those items you want so if you get 2 for 1, go with it!
