Hotels for guests

Sara, on January 30, 2019 at 15:49 Posted in Plan a wedding 0 11
Hello,

As I go through the planning of our wedding I realized that we forgot a piece when considering our venue : hotels in relation to the venue!
Our ceremony / cocktail reception is in West Vancouver which does not have any hotels. The closest ones are in North Vancouver (Lower Lonsdale) or downtown and are not the most affordable.
I guess my question is : how much should I fuss/care about this?

Can anyone suggest a nice way of saying : you need to sort out your accommodations AND transportation to and from.

We we are having a small wedding (max 70 on guest list but ideal is 60) with a small budget.

I can can suggest a few hotels and sites like Airbnb or a vacation rental (I think there is one called vrbo.ca) .

I guess im just not sure how to approach this!!

help :-)

Providing suggestions is nice but ultimately people should be prepared to have their own transportation unless otherwise stated. I've never been to an OOT wedding where I expected transportation to be provided.

Unless everyone is from out of town I wouldn’t really worry about hotels. If you have some out of towners you could just print off a list of somewhat reasonable hotels in the area and let them decide what to do.

Are any B&Bs in the area that can be rented out for the time of your wedding guests to stay near by close to the venue. Try to reach out to the inns or anything nearby and see if they can do anything for your guests.

If not, then your guests will understand they will need to make arrangements to stay near by or at a hotel if they are renting cars at the airport.

We're having a similarly sized wedding.

We got discount rates with 3 hotels in the area, and posted them as options on our website. If you do this, maybe aim for hotels near the airport, or downtown in an easily accessible area for public transit/taxis.

We included a "things to do" section on our site which includes some our favourite spots. We're getting married in Victoria, but if you do this maybe you can include your favourite Vancouver neighbourhoods.

We even included links to tourist pages (Explore BC etc).

We addressed the transportation issue by including a question in our FAQ section about the best ways to get around the city, and whether or not there'd be parking at our welcome dinner and wedding venues.

I believe that we live in an age where many want to secure their own accommodations (Air BnB and other vacation home rental site, loyalty points with a hotel chain, and the host of other discount travel sites etc). I think you can give your guests options, but ultimately let them figure it out.

As a guest, I wouldn't necessarily want to stay in a hotel where everyone else is staying, which is what happens when you do hotel blocks.

So I guess my answer is: I don't think you should fuss must about it, but there are ways that you can provide options/information to your guests and then just let it go and walk away.

    Good luck with your decision!

I feel like if you don't have a lot of out of towners or having your wedding at a hotel, you don't need to set up a block, although it is a nice gesture. You could give the out of towners you do have a list of hotels/various price ranges, and Airbnb recommendations, that's all you'd really need to do.

Whenever I've been to a wedding in town, I just went home afterwards lol

    Thanks Ladies!

My fiancé’s mom was really pushing the hotel block but in the end she is going to take care of the few people she wants to help with. It just got me thinking about it. We don’t really have too many out of towners.

I think I just needed reassurance that pointing folks in direction of a few websites would suffice.

For our wedding we have a hotel block and very few people have taken advantage of that. Most people have either booked a hotel desperately or an airbnb.

I agree with Stephanie. I did book rooms but I know most will probably go with Airbnb. I wouldn't worry too much...google, TripAdvisor, etc. Are all available

I found most of my guests booked at Airbnb. I had blocked rooms at two hotels nearby so guests could get a discount, and only 6 guests booked at the hotels, the rest used Airbnb. I would say don’t worry about hotel blocks. These days, most people know where to look for accommodation.

I would give suggestions of the Air bnb and few others like you mentioned. If people know the area you are having your venue they will more likely realize about hotels. When I have went and traveled to different weddings. I researched this and booked accordingly, I wouldn't fuss over it but at least you realized now and not a week before! This still gives you time if they ask to have suggestions.
