Gift Registry?

Megan, on January 12, 2018 at 12:51 Posted in Plan a wedding 0 13
What are you doing for your gift registry?

My fiance and I have been living together for 7 years and don't need a lot of things. We would honestly prefer money so we can buy a house, but I haven't been able to come up with a tasteful way to ask for money. What are you doing/what have you done?

We asked for some upgraded things and also for some silly or frivolous things that we wouldn't necessarily buy ourselves.

I have seen invitations that state "no boxed gifts" meaning they just wanted monetary donations.

I've also been living with my fiance for 7 years now and during that time we saved up to buy all the things we need and love for our home. Which leaves us with virtually nothing to be upgraded and nothing we need.

We created a registry with items that we want but don't need. (Party serving dishes, punch dispenser, a few extra towels and sheets because who doesn't need more of those lol), but we kept it small. I think most people generally understand if the registry doesn't have much it means money is probably a better option as they have everything.

    Hope this helps 😊

I know I sound like I work for them haha but register with myregistry.com. you can create a cash fund where people can put money into.

We had the same problem as you. We've been together 7 years, living together for almost the same amount of time. We created a registry for upgrades. things we'd like but wouldn't necessarily spend the money on. It's mostly kitchen stuff lol since we love to entertain and cook.

My DH and I had been living together for three years so we had everything we needed. We made a small registry with Bed, Bath & Beyond for some upgraded items plus things we wanted that we wouldn't spend the money on.

I got the majority of these items at my bridal shower (my MOH included registry info on the bridal shower invite).

For the wedding invitation I was going to write something about "cash gifts" in a nice way, but decided against it. 90% of my guests gave me cash/cheques and those that wondered about a registry either asked or knew I had one because of the bridal shower.

Both sets of parents also knew we wanted cash - so they spread the word if it ever came up.

Unfortunately, there is no tasteful way to ask for money. I have seen people say "in lieu of gifts, please consider donating to our house fund/reno fund/honeymoon etc."

I think most people are giving money these days anyway. In my observation, the "baby boomer" generation are still giving gifts but younger typically give cash. (This is not a scientific study, just from conversations with friends and family. So, it could be a localized finding!)

That is smart. I recently learned you can have a registry through Amazon.ca so we may go there too. The Knot has a great online registry system where you can create monetary gifts and people can "buy" them. I feel like it makes people feel better knowing their money is going toward a real thing? Unfortunately it isn't available in Canada.

We are sort of in the same boat. We've been living together for the past 2 years and really have everything we need house wise.

We were not going to have any sort of registry, however, some of our relatives were pretty insistent that we had one (Grandma's and mum's really). So we registered at the Bay. However, we're only putting a limited amount of stuff on there, nothing that we don't REALLY want.

I'm hoping by having a limited registry that people will default with money.
