Engagement ring too big

Abbie, on March 28, 2021 at 10:39 Posted in Wedding fashion 0 35
Hi all!

I had my finger sized by a jeweller in November 2019 and my fiancé purchased a ring (in that size) summer 2020...when he proposed in September it was a little big but nothing too drastic, maybe a half size too big. Now though, it literally rolls around my finger....I know your fingers can shrink in the cold, but it looks to be a whole size too big at this point. It’s at the point where I’m thinking I should get it resized but I’m really nervous to ruin it. Has anyone had experience with resizing rings? Also, I’m worried I’ll resize it and then somehow it’ll be too small at some point since my finger size apparently changed so much 🤦🏼‍♀️ Any input? ☺️

I preferred the adjuster that clips onto your band

I got them from amazon and walmart. I had both the coils and the adjusters that clip onto your band

Update! I picked my ring up today and it fits perfect. I can't even tell it was sized back up after being sized down so much. I also used the ring size adjusters and not having to use them anymore is so much nicer! Good luck with whatever you choose!

Here’s a close up! Thank you so much for your insight Smiley smile I think it’s worth making it a little more snug, even just to be sure it won’t fly off!

The shape of the front of you ring will change a little bit but I don’t think in an ugly way it will just be a little different on the sides. Are there a bunch of diamonds on the band? I can’t tell 🙈

But you can also ask about how small you can make it without compromising the ring shape Smiley smile A little tighter even if it isn’t completely snug might be better than not doing anything

Oh no!! That’s exactly the kind of thing I’m afraid of - ruining the ring! I’ll attach a picture here - would love to know what you think!

And I’ll look into those - thank you!! Smiley smileEngagement ring too big 2

What does your ring look like?
I use to work at a jewellery store and if certain styles get sized down drastically the diamonds can pop out easier
You can usually go down a couple sizes no problem without changing the look of the ring.Jewellery stores have little plastic attachments to pop on your ring to make it smaller temporarily which might be a better option for you since summer is coming and your fingers might get bigger in the heat

You can buy ring size adjusters on amazon, they look like a clear slinky and wrap around the ring to adjust it slightly. They aren't permanent, so of your fingers change sizes thought the seasons they're handy. If you're worried about getting it sized maybe try one of those first?

If it’s big enough that it’s falling off when your finger is at its smallest definitely resize it. Going up or down a size or two isn’t generally an issue unless you have an eternity band.

I had my ring sized down from an 8 to a 6.5 (what the lady at the store recommended for size) and it was too small when I got it back. I am now getting it sized back up to a 7. Nervous to get it back from sizing it again but feeling hopeful

I got my fiancee's resized a whole size down. She told me she was a six when she was actually a five. I asked the jeweler when I bought the ring and he said it's common and if I'm not sure, getting a size too big is better than a size too small. They fixed it afterward with no issues.

Definitely take it in to get it sized! Don't want to risk it flinging off in an uncontrolled environment

Just make sure he doesn't have any warranty plans with the website he got it from. Most of the time if you go to another jewelry store then the one you have a warranty with, the warranty becomes void and the ring isn't covered any longer

You're welcome! I think sizing down is easier than having to add metal so you should be okay!

Ok - good to hear!! I believe he ordered it online (he designed it on a site) so we'd probably have to go to a different jeweler but I imagine it has to be a fairly common request!
