How long did everyone wait between getting engaged and starting to plan their wedding?

Although my fiancée recently proposed, I definitely feel the pressure to pick a date and plan because this engagement anticipated for a long time from everyone. Now that it is here he has asked me to put the breaks on it meanwhile I feel the pressure to get my butt into gear and start planning.

We did it right away, because when we did start discussing dates we realized there were only a few times we really wanted to have our wedding on, and one of our preferred dates was less than a year away, so decided to jump on it.

If you and your fiance aren't in any rush, take your time and discuss your options. Keep in mind, if you have a specific venue or date in mind, you'll want to see how far in advance they book, as by the time you pick one, it may be gone.

We felt the pressure right away to set a date as well. We were engaged last April and I believe we set a date a month later and then started planning which I’m glad we did as many vendors book a year or more in advance. We’re getting married this August.

It all depends on how flexible you are. My engagement ended up being only six months long because we weren’t picky with our date. We saw a few venues, looked at the dates they had free, and chose one that worked (we had originally thought October, but ended up choosing June). Everything fell into place from there. If having a perfect wedding is important to you, or you have a specific vision, I’d say book venue, caterer and photographer as early as you can then relax with the rest. Good luck! Smiley smile

    Congratulations!!

My FH proposed in April 2017 and we confirmed our wedding date/location in January 2018. Thought everybody is happy for us, we definitely got some pushback with the length of our engagement and how long it took to confirm the date.

I heard them out and thanked them for their input and concern. I proceeded to let them know that it shouldn't matter how and when we get married, they should share our excitement and happiness for this big life event. Let's just say they've stayed off our back since then.

You typically have to start planning things a year in advance to get the vendors or venue you're wanting. Things book up crazy early.

I literally started planning on the drive home from where he proposed (the next day). We had our venue booked within about 2 weeks I think.

I waited approximately 2.5 months. I honestly wish I started earlier though since several of our top pick venues didn’t have our date available.

Got engaged Oct 2016...didn't start to really plan until about Jan/Feb 2017 only because we went to a wedding Expo in Jan which really set things in motion. Gotta say thank goodness i started planning early...the more you plan the more things you didn't realize you had to do are now on your plate.

I can't necessarily be help with the timeline (engaged to married in 10 months) but if you're in no rush I definitely agree with the ladies and say just take your time finding your venue and maybe your date will find you.

Although on a shorter timeline we picked our venue and then went with one of the only dates they had available this summer.

From the venue you can do everything on your time.

It definitely comforts me to know that you gals are on the same page about booking the venue and then taking a break. Makes me feel a lot better knowing that I’m not jumping the gun by saying we should be sourcing out venues while enjoying our engagement!

If you want a specific date or a short engagement I would pick a venue soon and then put the brakes on. Our venue was booking 1.5 years ahead when we called them so it made our engagement longer than we wanted and we only waited a month between getting engaged and booking a venue and a date.
Also like Holly said, there is a lot to plan so the larger the wedding the sooner I would recommend starting to plan

I've noticed that venues go fast, so that is number one of you ask me and as soon as you can. At the time of our engagement our date was 2 years away and about 2-3 months in we booked out venue. Then we did photography and the officiant. I suggest you get a wedding to do book or something along those lines, they cleared everything up for me and personally they are a life saver!! There is A LOT in planning so the sooner you start the better if you ask me.
