Donations in lieu of favors

Megan, on July 1, 2018 at 21:55 Posted in Plan a wedding 0 12
My dad passed 19 ueats ago from cancer and my mother has Alzheimer's. In lieu of favors we would like to donate to both since neither of my parents will be there. The wedding is small backyard, family and close friends and it is not our first marriage. Thoughts? I was thinking of an explantion in a frame to let people know?

Umm...what? Donating to a special cause is greedy and self-absorbed? I always thought donating was generous and selfless! I don’t know where you read those posts but they are the greedy/self-absorbed ones!
I think it’s awesome what you are doing! A lot of times people don’t take their favours home anyway, so this seems like a good idea to me! You know where your money’s going! Congratulations on your upcoming wedding!

    Hi Terr,

I'm sorry you had to go through reading all those negative posts.

Your idea of supporting your local children's mental health program is beautiful and aligns perfectly with your calling to be a teacher.

I applaud you for doing what you know is right, selfless and compassionate.

    Stay true to yourself.

Best wishes on a smooth and relaxed wedding day and many years of wedded bliss!

I know this is an old thread, but can I just say, it has made me feel so much better! I literally just read hundreds of posts of people calling this idea self-absorbed, greedy, attention-seeking, etc. and I was absolutely crushed. My wedding is literally 12 days away - too late to order favours and I had really wanted to donate to our local children's mental health program as I am a teacher and see the need for it every day.

That's a wonderful idea. A little sign at a table would be a nice, simple explanation. Definitely more meaningful than little favours!!

That sounds beautiful to me. I myself have never cared if I got something at a wedding - and it would be nice to see that the favour doesn't go to waste (like a car freshener). If anything maybe reach out to people to see if anyone has a work incentive that matches large donations? (Mine does so perhaps you may know someone who's work is the same.)

I would much rather see someone donate to ANY charity instead of me getting a small favour that usually end up not getting used. Beautiful idea! I love it! And I don’t think anyone would ever get upset

I think it’s a lovely idea and I couldn’t see that anyone would be unappreciative. The people that are attending your wedding are there to support you both and what matters to you.

I think it's a nice idea but not everyone will. You don't know which charities everyone supports, so for some it may go unappreciated regardless of the sentimentality of it. Just something to consider.

I think that would be beautiful, maybe add a photo of your parents together? And a short explanation?
We are doing something similar, in lieu of wedding favours we are adding the money we would’ve spent to our flower budget, and then 1/3 the flowers are going to be hung at the place my grandmother died, and the rest are being donated to old folks homes and hospitals. 🤗 (most people forget to take home wedding favours anyways)
