Doing your own hair and makeup?

Tiana, on January 11, 2022 at 19:15 Posted in Beauty 0 11
We're getting married on one of the Gulf Islands in June, and because of the remoteness of the location (which results in very limited options if you're not willing to pay an EXORBITANT amount to get someone out there) and the fact that I'm pretty particular about my makeup, I've decided to do both myself.

Has anyone else done this or is anyone planning to do this? Do you have any tips on how to stay calm the morning of? Must have products to help keep things looking great? I'm particularly worried about my hair and humidity (it likes to frizz and drop the curls)!
To give a little background, I'm going to do some bouncy curls and wear my hair down (I'm curling then clipping them up halfway to set). My makeup is going to be simple and neutral, with a healthy flushed cheek and fluffy faux lashes.

We’re eloping on a hiking / backpacking trip - so I will be my own hair and makeup team in the backcountry, doing my hair and makeup in my tent… so far, I’ve tested a few different hair styles on hiking trips or ski trips, to see how my hair holds up overnight / during activities, and I did a trip to Sephora too! The lady that helped me was so helpful, and helped me pick products that will last with sweat etc. Im just practicing every time I go somewhere 😂 I make my fiancé take photos every time so I can see how it looks to find the balance between everyday & photo makeup.. doing it myself is much more “me” and I think it’ll be a fun story to look back on! I fully recommend doing it and learning and having some fun with it! 🥰

You're going to be the happiest you've ever been the day of your wedding therefore the most beautiful! I was the MOH for my sister's wedding in 2018 and I did the make up for the bridal party. I have zero knowledge and even less experience (I do not wear make up regularly at all) but with a lot of research on Pinterest and YouTube and practicing on myself I had a good time with it the day of. We went to the drug stores to talk to the beauty consultants about best products and for the best price as well. With all the tutorials out there I'm sure you'll have no trouble finding help with your looks Smiley smile

Haha, this makes me feel so much better. I'm glad you trust your sister to do your hair! Mine will also definitely be around to help if things go south. The good news about bridesmaids is there's no shortage of help and advice on the day!

You are absolutely right. Photography makeup is so different, and it's important to make sure you're comfortable with what's needed. I feel like I'm piling makeup on when I'm doing tests, but it totally disappears in photos and looks natural!

Thank you! The girls at sephora are always so helpful, you're right. I need to go quiz them some more.

If possible, maybe try going to like a Sephora or something. They can help you find the right products that will last all day and look great in photos. I know I did that for when I was MOH for my besties wedding and I did my own make up. They helped me find products that would last and work for my needs. Same thing could go with hair - go to a salon and see what types of products they would recommend for the ultimate hold!

But I agree with Hank. Maybe do a couple test runs of what you want (almost what you'd do with MUA) just so you can see how it holds.

I am not sure about doing my own makeup yet. What worries me is that photography makeup isn't the same as everyday makeup and that it won't look good in photos. Let's face it, you only have one chance. I have already booked my stylist to do our hair. .

I am also doing my own hair and make up. Make up, i'd say that i'm pretty good at it so i'm not worried about that. My hair, i'm having my sister do it. She's pretty confident that she can do it lol fingers crossed. I'm also having similar hair to what you are envisioning =)

My wife and her bridesmaids did their own makeup and hair. There were five of them in total and they gave themselves four hours at the venue.

Definitely do a few tests locally to see how your hair will hold up. Maybe visit a steam room (or steam up your bathroom) to see how your hair do will be affected by the humidity.

One thing that my wife had issue was, she had a hair straightener product applied over half a year before the wedding and it affected how well her curls held up. She needed some super strong hair gel in order for the curls to stay put all day.

For reference, this is the hair I'm working towards.
