Ditching the Dj?

We are strongly considering scrapping the DJ and opting for a carefully curated playlist instead. I have already asked all our guests to provide their favourite songs to dance to. It's quite expensive for only 3 hours of entertainment, and my Dad and Uncle have volunteered to play the part of "MC" to announce dances and such. Since our guest list is only about 40 of our close friends and family, we don't think it will be an issue to get everyone on the dance floor (aka the beach.)

Have you ever attended a wedding sans DJ? What did you think? What are your thoughts on this?

I think for the size of your wedding, and time of dancing, you should be good! I've been to weddings where the couple just used a Spotify playlist and it worked out! I would have someone be in charge of the playlist that isn't you or your FH so you don't have to worry about that day-of!

We are doing this! FH used to be a DJ in the past, so he has the basic equipment still so we are going to do a mix of curated playlist, have asked a family friend to be our MC, and then FH wants to "spin" for an hour or so at his own wedding (fulfilling a dream). Saving quite alot of money on this! I think its doable if you are comfortable with tech and have the playlist ready to go, and have someone who can be responsible for it the night of.

A small wedding seems fair to ditch the DJ since their cost is more for what your wanting to pay. Creating a playlist is better and to your guests choices.

We had 72 guests and still had a DJ who was worth the cost since I wanted one that was a MC as well.

My cousin didn't have a DJ, he and his wife just made a killer spotify playlist and rented a sound system. I think it's a great route to go instead of paying for a DJ. Just make sure you have a friend to cue up the important songs at the right time like for your first dance, etc.

I recently asked a friend who she used as a DJ at her wedding because I remembered people dancing all night and her answer was Spotify!
We are also having a small wedding and will be putting a playlist together instead of spending all that money on a DJ.

I have never attended one myself, but this is what FH and I have decided to do for ours too! On the RSVP cards we have space for a song request which will be added to the playlist which I've already got all the typical good oldies for weddings, plus the playlists for the ceremony, cocktail hour, and all the singles dances. We appointed 2 of our best friends to MC for us and they're the type of people that love to perform so I think they'll do an amazing job together, and it'll be more personal with them doing it too!
