Destination weddings - Overrated or Underrated?

Cliodhna, on November 25, 2019 at 09:05 Posted in Plan a wedding 0 21

How do you feel about jetting off for a wedding? Of course there are some awesome benefits (beautiful backdrops, smaller guest list to manage, excuse to travel with your loved ones, etc.), however, do you feel like they’re too complicated to plan?

Do you think destination weddings are overrated or underrated?

Personally overrated, but for some couples it's exactly how they want it so it's just right for them

I think it totally depends on the couple and their guests. Definitely a larger cost to the guests (and not always cheaper for the couple) but if it's what works best then it's the right choice. We went to a different province intentionally to keep the guest list small and it was absolutely perfect for us and our guests. Having our wedding in Winnipeg would have meant having a wedding that wouldn't have been right for us for several reasons. Smiley smile

I personally think they are overrated. They aren't always cheaper for anyone really - guest or couple - despite what a lot of articles say. Most of the ones we looked at as just an option were quite a bit more than locally (double). If I had that big of a budget, I'd stay local and stretch the dollars further.

I would love to do a destination wedding but there was no way. Too many important people wouldn't be able to make it.

I completely agree. It is a lot to ask for guests to go away with you just because it will be easier for the couple. What could be an easy $200 gift for a couple turns into $2000 depending on the place/resort.

    Overrated.

The cost related to the expenses of resort/hotel, food, shopping, travel and monetary gift adds up easily. It can be a vacation though the events held are fun and exciting to party as a guest than having to go out of the venue. The amount the venue does ask to pay down as a deposit and the remaining costs paid upfront at the due date.

I think neither. A destination wedding can be so many things! Some people treat them like a small elopement, and others like a big beach party with their best people.

I am not sure either way. They are great if you want to keep it really small or even as a vow renewal for the two of you.

I'm not sure if I'd say overrated, but it seems more fitting for an elopement than an event to invite people to. Not everyone will be able to afford/go to a destination wedding, so it can result in heartbreak to not have certain people be able to join.

Over-rated. It may be cheaper for the couple, but only because the cost is downloaded onto the guests. And don't even get me started on the fact often the guests are paying thousands to see a ceremony that isn't even a legal wedding. Just nope.

Overrated. People say it’s cheaper, but we actually didn’t find it to be much cheaper (we also didn’t have a 30 grand wedding so I guess destination weddings are cheaper than that).

I think underrated (I'd absolutely love to go somewhere exotic with a smaller guest list) but unrealistic for many.

Overrated just because it's a lot of time and money to ask of your guests. Quite a few people expected me to get married at Disney World, but the reality was that a lot of our friends and family wouldn't have been able to attend due to cost, or taking vacation from work or age.

Overrated, I think? I just wouldn't choose it for my wedding due to a bunch of factors, including family and travelling.

Overrated. I agree with Tori's comment 100%. If you plan one with the expectation of it being like an elopement with few or no other guests then great. However expecting your friends and family to plan to travel to these places, can be tiresome. I also hold my vacation time/funds very preciously so when something like that pops up, it is a dilemma.

Overrated - I've been to a destination wedding and it was beautiful but you basically have to be prepared for close friends and family not to come because of the cost.

    Overrated?

I just think it's unrealistic for most people because either it's an elopement or??? Because most people can't afford to just go away on a vacation just for YOUR wedding.
