Will you consider hiring a beginner makeup artist?

Miav, on July 29, 2019 at 18:25 Posted in Beauty 0 10

One of my bridesmaids has a friend who has always been passionate about makeup and just recently made it official as her full-time freelance job 6 months ago. My bridesmaid recommended her and I went for a trial last weekend. Since she is pretty new in the industry she only charged me 25 cad for the trial. She is actually pretty good and I liked the makeup (though it needs some adjustments), thinking to hire her for my makeup for our engagement shoot this August to further test her skills since she is applying to be my MUA for the actual wedding.

I am a bit unsure as she is a beginner and it is going to be her first wedding. Although our wedding is still more than a year away and she will probably gain more experience, I am aware that seasoned MUAs book a year in advance. A year in advance for us will be Sept 2019 which meant I have to make a decision pretty soon. The trial also took almost 2 hours just for my makeup, and she is also applying to be our hair artist on the day of.

Bridal Party for hair/mua will consist of me, 4 bridesmaids, 2 moms, and 3 flower girls. And I estimate that we will only have 4+ hours to get ready on the day of because of venue restrictions. Another big thing is the price, she is only charging us a third of what the seasoned MUAs ask for. But I am aware that weddings can be stressful with hair/makeup timings so I am very unsure on how to go about this decision.

Would you consider hiring a beginner MUA as her first wedding?

For reference, here are the photos from my trial yesterday:

I would hire her, especially then she can say that she's done at least 1 wedding! It'll be hard for her to get work if everyone is passing her over for someone more experienced.

I would be a little weary on the time, but again, it can be fixed with practice between now and the wedding. I would also see if she had someone who could help her out, or if the bridesmaid who's friends with her is able to help out if she's also decent at makeup/hair.

I agree with Casey- she could get a second person but also by then she will have more experience and be faster with time. I would try her out again with your engagement photos and see if her speed has gotten better. Normally most are 1 hour max per person

I think she did a pretty good job on your makeup! If the price is right, go for it. Chances are she will have a lot more experience before your wedding day, and if you are worried about time see if she has someone to help her out as well.

I'm considering hiring my best friend's younger sister who is an aesthetician to do my wedding makeup. She has been doing prom makeup for younger friends for years but I don't think she's ever done a wedding.

I don't know, it might be nice to have her there since she's someone I trust, even if she doesn't do my makeup she might be able to do makeup for my bridesmaids who don't regularly wear makeup.

Thanks so much! I was actually quite surprised to receive a 2,000 cad quote from the "seasoned" MUAs. Wasn't expecting it to be that expensive. I was horribly wrong lol

That's my concern as well. I will probably need to hire a different hair artist if we pick her

If you're happy with the trial and the engagement shoot makeup, I think that's a sign she's good enough. But I'm wondering how she can possibly do seven women and three girls' hair and makeup in only five hours?

I mean, if the price is right then I don't see why not! It looks great!

For my wedding we are doing our own makeup (some girls are better at eye makeup so they will do mine - but I'm good at eyeliner so I will help others, etc.) so I don't see anything wrong with giving her a chance. Heck, my photographer has only photographed one wedding but she is my friend and it's a cheaper price so why not! Besides, I'm 21 and wouldn't be able to afford somebody who charges $2,000 for that...
