Where to start?

Meghan, on August 2, 2019 at 15:06 Posted in Plan a wedding 0 24
Hi Everyone!

I'm super new to this. I got engaged yesterday and we have set a date for next year (yay). I'm just wondering if any of you that are almost done your wedding planning or have already had your big day if there are any tips and tricks to getting the planning started? I would really appreciate any input you have.

Thank you all so much in advance!

Make a rough guest list and then email all the venues you like and book apts to see them and ask questions! then decide if youre going to a church or have the ceremony at the hall instead

I feel like that is the most important.. once you have a secured date and place then everything else just starts to fall into place!

    Congratulations!!!

The first thing we did was find a venue, that solidified the date, then we kind of went from there. I would make a list of what things are important to you and what kind of wedding you want to have. We had a simple wedding but we still knew what we wanted it to look like. For me, the most important thing was a photographer so I started looking for that pretty early on. We went to a Wedding/bridal show and got some great ideas from there too.

    Yay congratulations!

First things first, enjoy the bliss of your engagement for a few days, show off that ring every chance you get!

Next, get to pinning. Pinterest will be your best friend when figuring out your style for the big day.

As far as the more in depth planning stuff goes, you and your new Fiance will need to talk budget, and draft a guest list so you can look at venues with the right amount of space for everyone you want to be there.

    Good luck!

    Congrats and welcome to weddingwire!
Everyone has pretty much hit the main points! My biggest tip on here, read all the discussions and comments. This really helped me in the beginning and you get so many supportive and different opinions.
Don’t think it is too early to plan or book anything. I had all my bigger vendors booked by October last year because I knew exactly what I wanted.
Most importantly, there will be so many comments from friends and family about how things should go and what you should do.... this day is about your and your FH! So stick to your guns on decisions because in the end it’s what makes you guys happy!
Looking forward to helping you along the way!

    Congrats on your engagement!

We are all here to help and guide you in any way possible in your planning process.

Your venue has been booked and guest list would be helpful to know how many guests to invite budgeting for food and bar (buffet or plated/open or cash) will be your biggest expense. Vendors you choose to look and book will be based on reviews, compatibility and price.

Another set of tools I used was the WW Budget and Checklist to put the value and estimated amount per category needed. It did help a lot knowing what you need and what you can pass on if not planning on using.

Wedding binder/folder is something that can have all documents and contracts put together in case you need to look up information or payment made on a certain day. Purchases made and safely kept in the need of returning the item. Vendor contacts are very important to keep too for phone numbers and names to know.

Congrats Smiley smile the biggest advice i can give you is give yourself as much time as possible to do things. it will help you not get insanely stressed. also dont worry about what others expect from you or your wedding because its about you two not them

Congrats!! The others have layed it out pretty well - I would first decide if you want a big wedding or a smaller wedding and compare that to your budget. Theeeen start looking for a venue that fits that. For me the most important thing wasn't the venue or the date - but rather that we stayed within our budget of $20,000-$25,000 and keep our guest list of 250 (we had to have 2 waves of invites because we had 300 on our list...). For this we were willing to sacrifice location. So whatever is most important (I would assume budget) - go with that and see what you can find to fit it.

    Congratulations and welcome!!!

As others have suggested, looking at venues is a good place to start as venue influences a lot of other aspects of planning and takes up a big chunk of the budget usually. Speaking of budget, it’s good to start with some kind of rough budget. You don’t need to get really detailed, but knowing how much you are able to spend will help steer your planning and vendor inquiries in the right direction. Also try to get an idea of how big your guest list will be. You don’t want to fall in love with a venue to then realize you have to give it up or trim your list because not everyone will fit.

Hi Meghan, Congratulations and welcome to WeddingWire! Smiley laugh I am also getting married on Sept 2020. I suggest to look for a venue first and browse inspiration/planning articles in this website to gather more ideas. The community forum is also very helpful. Lots of support and kindred spirits here. Hey there! Congrats and welcome! So I'm getting married October 5th this year. Not too long now. I would recommend to start by watching a few of Jamie Wolfer's videos. She is super helpful. And she covers a variety of topics. Also make sure you don't take on more than you can handle. Pick a bridal party based on who is the most reliable not who you feel closest to. You need to be able to delegate. If anyone gives you a hard time don't be afraid to stand up for yourself. At the end of the day it's your wedding, not everything will go perfectly but once it's over you will have had the best day of your life and be married to your partner. Also don't be afraid to post questions and reach out to this community it is a wonderful collection of beautiful people ready and willing to help.

    Congratulations!!

    welcome to WeddingWire.

my wedding isn’t until next July but I’m basically done my wedding planning! To get started, I would suggest finding a venue you like. This will give you an idea on how many people you can invite for your big day!

Once you have your venue you can start looking into other things such as catering, alcohol (if both are not included at your venue), DJ/band, etc.
