When to start dress shopping...

Breanne, on July 10, 2018 at 00:45 Posted in Plan a wedding 0 28
Hello everyone!!!

I was wondering when is a good time (i.e., how far in advance) to start wedding dress shopping?

My wedding is September 21st, 2019. I was thinking of starting shopping in November of 2018. I have started to browse, but have yet to actually try anything on. Part of my reason for wanting to wait to try dresses on until November is that I’m working on getting into better shape, so that dress shopping will be more enjoyable for me.

Thanks in advance for all of your advice! 😊

I was worried about shopping too early for my Oct 2019 wedding. But honestly, I feel like the earlier the better. I just bought my dress a few weeks ago and was very lucky to find one the first day out shopping.
But they did say that it would take 4 months to come in. So this way if it is a little later, i do not have to panic as i will still have another year.

Also when it comes to alterations, where I live there are only 2 in the area that specialize in alterations, and the woman at the store told me the number 1 woman is booked months in advance. so I lucked out to have found my dress and gotten my name into the seamstress so I do not have to stress when it gets closer to the big day Smiley smile

I honestly turned down a bunch of dresses because I did not like the way my body looked in them (also looking to loose some weight before the big day) but once I found the right one, i knew it was going to be perfect no matter what

    Congrats on your engagement!

I got engaged June 2017 and I went dress shopping in August 2017 and said yes to the dress at the end of October 2017. My wedding is September 1st 2018.

I think going in November is a good idea because you don't want to start too early.

Anytime under a year is normal to start dress shopping.

I went dress shopping in October and my wedding is on August 4th. They said my dress could take up to 3 months to get in and it was in within a month and they didn’t store it either so make sure you have a place to store it. Alterations I only needed a bustle and paid under 20.00 for it with a local lady. Look into other places to do alterations cheaper than the store.

I think anytime around the 1 year mark is your safest bet! hopefully you find your dream dress right away, but just in case you don't on the first shopping trip, you want to make sure you leave yourself enough time to go out again. I bought my dress in Sept 2017 and am getting married in Sept 2018, they told me my dress would be in sometime in July...it still hasn't come in yet, but it makes me happy to think i got it so far in advance because I didn't realize it would take so long to come in!

I am getting married Jun 1, 2019 and I started dress shopping in Mar 2018. I think it doesn't hurt to start a little early because you really don't know what looks good on you until you try the dresses on. Also, I was also contemplating making a customized dress which needs to be done one year in advance. If you don't see anything you love out there, you might have to go for this alternative so it's better to plan early in case.

So..we like..got engaged on Christmas (gross, I know) and by mid Feb, I had purchased a dress. My wedding isn't until October 19, 2019. I'm going to start my dress alterations in January, and go from there.

So I think it just depends on how much you want to/can alter the dress you find, yanno? Live your best life!

I went 13 months before my wedding and they said that around a year should be fine. All the boutiques I called said their dresses would take 4-5 months to be delivered so keep that in mind and plenty of time for alterations.
    Good luck!

That’s about what my timeline was too. I ended up going to the wedding fair in January and buying a dress cheap. Since then I’ve lost a lot of weight and went to buy another dress just a month and a half ago and my wedding is January.

This is very similar to my timeline. We got engaged in Dec 2017, I waited til May 2018 to go shopping for our Jan 2019 wedding.
I browsed before hand, and even tried on some by myself to get the nerves out...
I think you'll ne right on track!

My wedding is june 22, 2019 and I am dress shopping August 13 and 14 of this year! That would be the same timeline as yours, and from what I know that's pretty much perfect for time!

That sounds like a perfect timeline! It usually takes 6-8 months to get your dress in, and then another month or two worth of alterations if need be Smiley smile
I hope you find your perfect dress!
