What’s involved in changing your last name? I’m in Ontario

Jackie, on February 1, 2018 at 23:15 Posted in Ontario 0 16
Does anybody know what’s involved in changing your last name in Ontario? I’m thinking that I might like to take his name also. He actually doesn’t care as he doesn’t like his last name. But if I look at all the woman in my family that have gotten married, they have all taken the mans name. So if anybody can tell me what’s involved in doing this, that would be helpful.

The change can happen only 3 months after when the marriage license is ordered and mailed out to you. The marriage license will be registered on the wedding day and submitted by the Officiant.

Service Ontario can change your last name on all the documents provided the marriage certificate is brought in with you. Passports can be changed too except for airlines tickets. Best to do before any travel plans or after returning from your trip.

Yes I agree. I wouldn’t want to change my Birthday certificate. Everything else find. Not liking having to change my sin number though but oh well.

No problem here to help if I can lol. I just read the article Joey posted and basically that is everything I did without even knowing it lol. I never tried to change my birth certificate, that's who I was born, and that was very important to Me, but every other aspect my name was legally changed.

Also I was married in Cuba to a Cuban, and my Spanish marriage certificate was completely acceptable here, never had to order any thing else.

I was married previously about 15 years ago for a blink of an eye. All that I did was bring my marriage licence with me, and changed my health card and SIN card, showed my licence at work and went on revenue Canada's website and changed it there. I went to the passport office with ID, and they put a name change sticker in my passport, oh and also the same day updated my drivers licence. I remember that all I had to pay for was a new pic for my drivers licence. Things may be different now, but it was very easy.

Wow Joey thanks!! That’s a great article. So I can change everything except for my birth certificate and I’m ok with that. I was born in Quebec.

Will you be assuming his name or legally changing it?

Well you can assume his last name or you can legally change your name. Legally changing your name costs money and requires a new SIN card and "birth certificate" to be created for your new name. Assuming costs nothing and you can use that name on all documents. Go to this page and check out all the information necessary to make your decision.
