What colour suits would you suggest based on colour scheme?! How can fh and his son stand out?

Jenn, on November 11, 2020 at 13:59 Posted in Wedding fashion 0 7

Hey Everyone!

Need some help figuring out A - what colour suits (or even just blazer) would best compliment our colour scheme and B - how both my FH and his son can be somewhat different from the rest of his groomsmen (his son is a Jr. Groomsman).

Our colour scheme is sage green, rose gold, steel gray, and either blush or ivory and black accents (I am leaning towards ivory).

Any feedback or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

Based on that, charcoal suit definitely seems like the go to. The colour of accessories can depend on what you choose as your bridesmaid dresses, whether that be grey or green.

There are a few ways you can get your groom and his son to differentiate from his groomsmen:

-The groom and his son can wear charcoal while the groomsmen wear a lighter grey

-If you want only the same shade of grey, then groom and his son can wear a three piece suit (with vest) while groomsmen wears two piece (without vest)

-The groom and his son can wear suits peak lapels while the groomsmen wear suits with notch lapels

-The groom and his son can wear bow ties while the groomsmen wear long neck ties

-If you want everyone to have bow ties, the groom and his son wears a black bow tie while the groomsmen wears the bow tie of your bridesmaid colours

-The groom and his son wear white pocket squares while the groomsmen wears a pocket square in the second accent colour. Do not match the ties and pocket squares in the same colour/pattern.

-The groom and his son wear black shoes while the groomsmen wear brown shoes (especially if they are wearing a lighter grey)

As for matching the rose gold, will your FH be getting a matching wedding band with you? If not, there are also cufflinks, tie clips, and belt buckles that he can incorporate it in.

I would budget $600 for the groom's outfit. A decent suit off the rack will run you around $250, $300 if you get the matching vest for three piece. Aim for a suit that's at least 80% wool. Avoid polyester as they're cheap, look like plastic, and will suffocate your FH in the summer heat making him drench in sweat. You can go the made to measure route but the good places will start at $600 just for a two piece. Online stores like Indochino or Suit Supply have regular sales for made to measure where the suits start at $350 but quality varies and to be honest, I find the online route not the way to go. If I'm getting custom clothing, I want a tailor to properly measure me and do multiple fittings to get the outfit right. They do have some physical stores but from what I heard, they're more like show rooms and they don't have tailors working there since it's purely for sales (no one is physically handling any of the clothing since it's all made overseas).

A proper white dress shirt will run you an additional $30-$50 depending on where you go. You can go for regular barrel cuff shirts or French cuff shirts if you want to use cufflinks. Tip Top Tailors sell convertible cuff shirts that are regular cuffs but have a hole that you can insert cufflinks into. Again, avoid polyester and aim for as close to 100% cotton as you can. Ties are around $20 each. Accessories like cufflinks and tie clips are around $20 each. And you should allocate $100 for alterations

You can certainly find sales that will be below that range but have that amount just to be safe. Plus, the feeling of having money left over is awesome! Good thing is, you have some time to save.

    Hope this helps!

I am all over the place on the BM dresses, as we are now not getting married until 2022 (originally we were aiming for 2019, but got laid off, and 2020 - well, covid) - only thing I have nailed down, is my dress that is all paid off and hanging in one of my BM's closets...

My wedding ring/band is rose gold, so that will most likely be a main accent colour (with pops of beige & black) with the grey and sage green more prominent...

Just getting a leg up on the planning on mens' wear, so that we can see what is out there and figure out $$ or if anything needs to be custom... I am a bit lost on this, and the FH would wear a powder blue dumb and dumber suit/ruffled shirt, with a Toronto Maple Leaf logo if he thought he could get away with it Smiley winking

The colour scheme in my head is a combination of the two boards below -

What colour suits would you suggest based on colour scheme?! How can fh and his son stand out? 1

Oooh, a menswear question!!! Smiley laugh

If "steel grey" is a colour, I highly recommend getting a charcoal suit for the FH and his son over any of the other colours. It's more formal and the suits will have re-wear value in the future for other occasions (it'd be really tough to find an opportunity to wear a sage green suit). His groomsmen can wear the same suit and find other ways to differentiate the groom from the groomsmen through accessories, or they can wear a lighter colored gray suit.

Do you have your bridesmaid dresses sorted out? If so, can you post a picture of the dress? We can provide feedback on giving a cohesive look based on that, if you like. Because you mentioned quite a number of colours, I'm not sure which is the dominant one.

I would go with black or the steel grey for jackets with sage green ties or pocket squares. Maybe they can be in grey and the others in black? Or vice versa.

Some seamstresses can make pocket squares or ties out of fabric from hemmed bridesmaids dresses, so that would be a perfect color match! Rose gold tie clips would tie in that color as well (amazon is where hubby bought his, I think he has black, brushed silver, gold, and rose gold that came in one pack).

For us we are having groom have a blazer under suit jacket- groomsmen don’t. I’ve also seen other people have groom with tie and groomsmen with bow tie or vice versa to stand out different!
