Wedding theme: how to pick?

Salume, on February 6, 2017 at 12:15 Posted in Plan a wedding 0 31
Hello lovely ladies,A venue we're planning to check out just asked us about the wedding theme (I guess they want to show us customizable options or something). The thing is, I have no idea and I find it difficult to fit into just one category (i.e. formal, rustic, etc.) and I'm not keen on picking a very specific theme (i.e. Harry Potter). On top of that, I'm not a romantic person at all and it makes deciding even more difficult. How did everyone else decide on a theme and what advice do you have?

Agreed. Maybe google Wedding Trends for 2017 and see if anything speaks to you! That might help too! Have you found anything so far?

These look really cool! Thanks for sharing. We both love the table numbers and the invitations the most!!!We actually met through a mutual friend and bumped into each other at school afterwards. Smiley smileI did a whole bunch of bio-anthr courses too but I might be the only person that doesn't own a single skull shaped thing! He had a great idea a for decorations a few days ago. There are a whole bunch of historical period bottles at their office that we could potentially borrow, but I haven't checked them out yet.

I just saw another theme and thought of you! Someone on the American WW used geodes for their table numbers and they were so pretty! (I'm still trying to work with making archaeology a theme Smiley winking ) I think they'd go really well with garden flowers and you could find ones in your colours. They make really awesome geode cakes too! And they even have geode style invitations. (I think I've seen them on Minted and if you order through them, you can get a free wedding website that will match your design as well.)

How did you and your fiance meet? Did you work together or you both just happen to be archaeologists? (Again I'm so jealous! I studied biological anthropology in college and archaeology has always been one of my favourite subjects!)

I think my wedding theme is SIMPLE...I just want it to be simple lol I picked the venue because the cermony site it beautiful and they provide chairs so I don't need to add anything. The inside reception site also doesn't require much. I am hoping to do some flowers on the tables in some mason jars and possible some paper origami cranes but not too much else. Bridesmaids are wearing charcoal and the colours will all come from the flowers. That is the plan anyway. Smiley smile

I would love a popcorn machine!!! Venues allow them but mine actually highly recommended avoiding having popcorn because people drop it all over and then you've got a movie theatre floor situation going on... gets a bit gross. I had never thought of it like that so I thought I would throw that on your radar

Haha that's funny! I know you're right and he's been involved in everything so far! But I'm not letting him off easy Smiley winking He never actually asked me for a first date and after a while we just figured we were together. So this time he actually has to ask Smiley xd The ring shopping started after he asked me what kind of a stone I would like on an engagement ring, but we didn't really count it as a proposal.

Hate to break it to you, but if the two of you are planning a wedding together you are engaged!! The ring is just a bonus, not the defining moment to make an engagement official Smiley xd

I guess getting married is a theme! Smiley winkingIt just sounds so overwhelming when people ask you these things and throw all these terms at you like modern - chic, garden-glam or whatever other made up word that could mean so many different things!!!

LolIt was also very reassuring that you thought the colors sound okay Smiley smile I'm a bit hesitant picking a color scheme that sounds like around muffin flavor! Smiley winking

    Hey Salume!
I'm not having a theme! Getting married is my theme! Haha

Maybe start by looking at colours and picking based on that. Or keep it neutral!
It's your day and you should stay true to who both of you are! If you don't want a theme then you don't need to do one at all.
Let us know what you decide!

Just jumping in to say that that all sounds really lovely, particularly the color combos!
Even though it's just an option... I want a hotel wedding in Jasper now...damn, would swoon so hard
Also, I totally was planning my wedding before I officially got engaged too!!. I wasn't on here but you bet I was on pinterest and talking to my friends about quotes for the reception!

There's no such a thing as over sharing on WW! Like I said, I always enjoy looking at your wedding photos and your guest book was awesome! I might actually steal that idea Smiley winking Still not sure about the type of venue because we're shopping around for a date! So far we've looked at a hotel with a beautiful view in Jasper and we are checking out a greenhouse and a couple of historical buildings spon. So we're all over the map! BTW, we're not officially engaged yet. We went ring shopping together a while ago and I started looking into things to figure out how much we have to save, etc. Smiley smileFor colors, his favorite color is orange and I think it would go very well with gray. But I don't want the bridesmaid to were either of those colors so I'm thinking pairing that combo up with cranberry or forest green and have white flowers in the arrangements to pull it all together.

Haha sorry hope I'm not oversharing! That is so awesome that you two are archaeologists! I'm so jealous. You could do a lot with that actually! You could get handmade ceramic vases for centerpieces (like pottery). I love your ideas of lots of fresh flowers! If you do more common flowers like ones you would find in a backyard, it's probably less expensive than roses.

Are you using outdoor or indoor venues? What about a garden theme to incorporate the flowers? I thnk colours are a good place to start! Maybe pick your favourite colours or a colour you both agreebon and then find a scheme o accent it.

Thanks for sharing the photos Sam, I've seen them before but it's always a treat to look at them again. Smiley smileI think the biggest thing that we share is that we are both archaeologists. But I'm not going to use trowels as decorations. LolColor scheme is another dilemma that needs it's own discussion! One of the biggest struggle for me is that I LOVE fresh flowers and I want lots of them! Not in ostentatious high arrangements, but something simple that looks like your grandma just cut from the backyard. But I know that's probably not happening because of the prices!

    That's a great starting point!
I feel like ours will be the same way. Intimate and cutesy, but at the same time metropolitan and refined.

Thanks Valerie! I didn't think you need a theme either and I was just startles with that question. I wonder if it has anything to do with the venue being a greenhouse!

Hi Salume! I definitely understand your dilemma but just know you don't have to have a theme if you don't want to! Many couples think that "wedding" is enough of a theme.

Ours just kind of fell into place. We went with the theme Our Story because we wanted our wedding to be very personal to us. I saw this chalkboard sign on Pinterest that had all of the important dates from the couple's relationship so I wanted to do something similar. We had our officiant tell the story of how we first met in our ceremony. I love reading and my husband has a screen writing degree so we decided to incorporate books into the theme. We collected vintage books in our colours and used them for centerpieces. I found these awesome book themed invitations on Etsy. I also fell in love with paper flowers and they were the highlight of our wedding! Everyone raved about them and they really tied the whole theme together. We also were able to find an aisle runner made out of book pages to use. Our cake designer came up with a beautiful cake design for us and made fondant books to go on it and then the background of the cake had the lyrics of our first dance on it. For our escort cards and guestbook, we printed out pictures of us with our guests. We had one copy that had their table assignment on the back (so they kept it) and on the other copy, they wrote a note for us to put in our photoalbum guestbook. This was one of my favourite ideas I came up with and it was really fun to look around at the tables and see all the memories we've made with them. It was a great conversation starter too!

We also love Disney so we incorporated a few small touches without it being a full out theme. We had a Mickey and Minnie cake topper and our uncle/niece and mother/son dances were to Disney songs.

I think a theme should be very personal to you two and make sense. Your guests should be able to look at it and think "that's totally them." Do you have any hobbies that you both enjoy or a favourite movie? Or you could incorporate things from your first date or how/where he proposed. Or even the season of your wedding can be the theme. Do you have a colour scheme in mind?

I'm seconding both Valerie and Chelsea. No theme required! Just colours and maybe a generally style (casual vs formal).

I agree with Valerie on this! When I was asked about my theme for the wedding as I got asked when I was shopping for my dress, venue hunting, or my family just asked, I just told everyone I don't have an actual theme. We have a colour scheme of purple and gold accents and I wanted things to match that way. I said I wanted things to look royal and elegant and that was the closet I could give them to a "theme".

You absolutely don't even need to pick a theme! For us, I just started picking things we liked and I noticed a trend... I still wouldn't even consider ours a "theme", it's more of a "motif". If you have your venue asking you can just tell them you don't have a specific theme and then just tell them about your colour scheme. If they want to suggest things just be honest about what you like and don't like.
