Wedding Socials

Emilyn, on December 6, 2019 at 07:56 Posted in Manitoba 0 3
I am from Saskatchewan and my fiancé is from Manitoba. Can someone give me a better idea of how wedding socials work and what the point is? Any help would be appreciated as I am pretty lost, I attended one last year and it just seemed like a big party to me lol. 2 of my bridesmaids are from Manitoba and 3 are from Saskatchewan so I have a little bit of help. Where do you get prizes from? What kind of food is served? How much are tickets? How much are people paying for drinks? How far ahead of the wedding do you make the social? (Wedding is Aug 8/2020). Do you invite people to the social or do they just show up if they know you?

Any help is appreciated, thanks guys!

Alright - my time to shine!! lol

The point: To raise money to put towards your wedding. It is basically a big fundraiser that if done right you can profit thousands of dollars.

Where prizes come from: Back in the day most would come from donations, but more and more places no longer give you things. You have to create a donation letter and attach a void ticket and drop them off at as many places/businesses as you can in hopes that they reach out to you willing to exchange goods for their name being posted at your social. The majority are to be bought/donated by you, your wedding party, and immediate family. I also found that attending the wedding shows, home and garden shows, fitness shows, etc. at convention centres you have tons of opportunities to win free stuff through their draws.

Ticket Prices: $10. The only time to have it cost more is if you are having a Halloween social or a New Years Social which then I've seen people selling tickets for around $20/ea but I never attend because... I'm not about to pay $20 for a single ticket... Support tickets are also sold btw! They are just merely to sell a ticket to those who want to suppor the wedding (social) but can't make it there physically. For my social we buttered the deal up by doing a draw for one of the support tickets to win $200 cash - which can only be won with the support ticket. Of course this meant that even people who bought tickets for the actual social bought support ones as well!

Drink Prices: For the most part you rely on making money based off the prizes, 50/50, and texas mickey so best bet is to keep the prices of booze low to keep guests happy and staying longer. We had the prices set so that the more drink tickets you buy the cheaper it is for them. $4 = 1 ticket, $15 = 4 tickets, $20 = 6 tickets, $30 = 10 tickets.

Kind of food: More and more people are choosing to go with pizza - and Dominoe's does have a wedding social discount in MB. The rest (like myself) go with the traditional spread of bread, cheese, sandwhich meat, pickles, etc. build your own sandwhich. Oh, and munchies mix on the tables for snacking until the food is put out later in the night.

Time for social: Here in MB we have a "wedding social season" which takes place from as early as February to as late as June - but some couples still have them all year round. At this point for you I would say to plan it for April or May since you need a few months to get the prizes together as well as the community centre's may be scarce. The ones me and my DH looked at booked about 9 months in advance.

How to invite: Best way is to make a FB page to not only get the word out but so people can share it to their friends and they can share it to theirs and so on. The goal is to get as many people there as possible to make as much money as possible.
