I agree with this idea.

The idea of buying a ring and watch is nice though it may be more if he did get another ring at the same time.

Hearing what you want do as a surprise, it would be better to get the watch as a separate purchase so you can send it to him on the day of the wedding as a gift never expected.

As for the ring, let that be together as he will know and will have to try it before leaving the jewelry store. Just view from what seems fit for the best results.

Have him send you pictures of exactly what he is looking for, or have a discussion with him if he wants it to be a surprise or not.

I would say it's fine to ask him if he would rather have a say or not - but if he doesn't care then just ask him for inspo pics. If he is one of those guys that says he doesn't care and won't... then just get one on the cheaper side but one that might match your ring or compliment it.

Does he want it to be a surprise? I wouldn't want to be surprised with a wedding ring, but some people might. Is he surprising you with your wedding ring?
I think I would want to discuss that and go from there.
