Wedding Insurance

Patricia, on March 19, 2020 at 10:29 Posted in Plan a wedding 0 9

Our Wedding is in September 2020. Do people suggest getting wedding insurance. We are having a wedding with approximately 55 guests. The venue is a resort and alcohol will be served, by their servers. I am also wondering if people have suggestions for insurance companies?

Thanks in advance.

When picking vendors, you need to ensure they have their own liability insurance. You shouldn't be covering their liability. When I'm getting insurance, it's only for cancellation purposes.

As I mentioned earlier, the Tuxedo Royale incident is a perfect example of how wedding insurance can help you. They closed a majority of their retail stores, kept the deposits of the grooms party with no way for the groom and party to access their clothes. Anyone who rented from them then had to find another retailer and pay rush fees to get their suits fitted and altered for their wedding. Maybe the person who's supposed to clean and alter your dress screwed up royally and now you either have to get it fixed or a new one in short time, paying premium fees. Or your wedding rings got damaged.

Imagine you had to postpone your wedding because of something non-Coronavirus related. Perhaps you or someone in your family got sick. Or you were laid off and can't afford your wedding. Wedding insurance can cover the costs you paid to vendors who won't refund such cancellations.

Or you have a destination wedding and a storm hits your venue, flooding the place making it completely inaccessible for you when you arrive. Or a snow storm prevents you from having your winter wedding.

That's what wedding insurance is for.

Yes, has nothing to do with the virus! Was more so thinking about general coverage/liability just in case in case!

I didn't know wedding insurance was a thing. I just figured if my September wedding needs to be moved to another date then so be it. We would still get married at the Justic of the Peace but have the reception later down the road

If you're getting insurance strictly due to covid-19, don't bother. Any policy you buy now will exclude anything coronavirus related.

Does your venue mandate you get insurance? Look at your venue's cancellation policies and insurance to see how you're covered. If it's fairly comprehensive, that's a good chunk that you don't need to worry about if you choose to get coverage yourself. If the venue doesn't require it and your guests aren't the rowdy type who will get drunk and damage/destroy the property, you may be able to go without it.

That being said, I always advocate for some insurance. Considering what you pay for everything else, $100-200 is not that much for peace of mind. I remember last year when a bunch of grooms freaked out because of the sudden Tuxedo Royale closures and they lost their suits and their deposits. That's a great example of how insurance can help you in such unfortunate events.

I'm also a september bride. I was looking into insurance, but as others have said the venue and vendors I have are really great to work with. If need be I will reschedule.

Wedding insurance is great if the price seems right. I myself did consider the idea and chose not to get it due to the cost too. The budget didn't allow to add the extra protection. Our guest list was 72 total and everything went well with the planning. Vendors are great to understand the situation and willing to work with the couple to reschedule if needed.

I didn’t get wedding insurance - extra cost for us and it wasn’t in the budget.

With COVID, I think vendors are being really great with brides and grooms needing to cancel or reschedule.
