Wedding Guest Attire

What do you typically wear as a guest to a wedding? Any particular rules you follow? Other than the obvious no-nos (white dress), is there any consistency on how you approach the dress code?

My go to is a two piece suit and tie. For something more casual, I'll wear a blazer or sportscoat and trousers, If it's really informal, I'll wear a vest with trousers. I will never wear shorts or sandals to a wedding, no matter how casual. It doesn't matter if it's on a beach or in someone's backyard, shorts and sandals are too casual for the occasion. If it's hot, I'll wear pants made with breathable materials.

Some people say it's better to be overdressed than under-dressed. But others will say you should not steal the spotlight from the wedding couple by dressing too nicely. What do you think?

My rule is, if you're not willing to wear it to a work event then you shouldn't wear it to a wedding.

I totally agree. Underdressing for a wedding just shows a lack of respect for both the occasion and the people you're there to celebrate. One older family friend showed up to my FBIL's wedding wearing a t-shirt and windbreaker. Like, really? REALLY? If one can't put in the effort, why bother showing up?

You'd think retailers would put a giant markup on white dresses so that people don't try to bypass the price of a wedding dress lol.

I notice the underdressed people at a wedding instantly. I think it's rude to be underdressed to be honest - weddings are formal events unless stated otherwise (i.e. suit and tie for a male and at minimum a cocktail dress (or suit) for a female... Not something you can wear to a bar - this one kills me). Generally speaking, the wedding is costing the couple 15k+ and showing up under dressed leaves the feeling of not caring or valuing the event. I may get flack for this but 🤷🏻‍♀️. I've never seen anyone that's ridiculously over dressed or upstaging the couple and I've been to A LOT of weddings. Also, super easy to ask if you're unsure of the attire.

Every time I look for wedding guest dresses the only cute ones I find are white hahahahaha. I usually end up wearing a cocktail dress and simple heels.

I tend to think for everything other than formal/white tie (which I feel is not very common - at least among people I know), as long as you aren't trying to outdo the couple or steal attention it's hard to go too wrong with a knee length or midi dress. For guys the safest bet is a classic suit and tie. You really can't go wrong with that because you can just take off the jacket or tie if you're overdressed and make it more casual.

I usually just wear a dress (usually knee length) and heels or flats. I've never been invited to a super formal wedding
