Wedding Dress Size - Too Big!!!

Honeylie, on February 27, 2020 at 10:36 Posted in Wedding fashion 1 11

Hi All!

When I ordered my dress I was a size 14, however was on an ongoing health journey. I have lost 35 pounds, and plan on losing a bit more.

I am now between size 8-10 and am worried my dress will be too big once it arrives. I know alterations can be tricky if they need to remove too much fabric. I dont want to go through the hassle of reordering a dress and waiting another 4-6 months... (my size 14 dress is expected to arrive in May).

Any other brides out there who had to go through this? what was your experience like? Did your dress turn out OK?

THANKS SO MUCH XOXO

Thank you so much!! I guess it all depends if i get a good seamstress or not. I have tried to find reviews on the seamstress at the shop I purchased from yet there are no comments.

    Congrats on your journey!
My dress is also a 14. I was hesitant because I also planned on losing weight. The consultant said a dress can be taken in up to 40lbs without losing integrity. I haven't had any alterations yet so I've just trusted that advice..

Get yourself a really good seamstress but its totally doable! I lost quite a bit of weight myself and still had to order a size bigger because of my bust. When the dress arrived I was swimming in it, but I knew even after the weight loss I wasn't going to lose that much up top so that was my only option. They are totally able to do it!

I know at a certain point it can mess with the outline of the dress - but my BM went from like a size 12 - size 6 and it ended up looking fine. Of course at that point it wasn't just the waist being taken in but the straps need to be readjusted so they are recentred.

What often happens when the dress arrives is that the sewer will look at where it needs adjusting. If there’s lots of fabric, they will take the dress apart and recut the pieces. The good thing is for a wedding dress, that only applies to the bodice, arms if your dress has them, and hips if you have a mermaid/trumpet style. It is definitely doable but may take some extra time to get done 😊

It's way easier to take a dress in than to let it out, so don't worry too much if it arrives too big. I've also read that it isn't difficult to take a dress in 2-4 sizes so unless you really really shrink you should be fine. Dress sizes aren't like street sizes so the huge drop in street size might not be the same in dress sizes either.
