Wedding dress

Nikolay, on February 21, 2017 at 12:05 Posted in DIY 0 4

My bride is planning to make her wedding dress herself, and she never made dresses before. Any advice?

Hi Nikolay! That's so amazing!! Smiley love Is there a type of dress she prefers in particular?

You could take a look at these discussions to get ideas on types of dresses:

I also just created this discussion for you two: 10 steps to make your own wedding dress

I think that's a wonderful idea! I would love to see how it will all look!

What type of dresses does she prefer? Does she have a lot of experience sewing? Smiley smile

Yeah I agree. If you've never made a dress before (and wedding dresses are their own species of dress), I'm not sure I'd want my wedding to be my first attempt! What sort of dress is she looking to make? If it's more of a simple dress but in white to make it bridal, then I think it could work but if you're making a ball gown or something that would need a corset, that would be more challenging! Wedding dresses tend to need more structure than regular dresses which can make it more coplicated. And the details like lace or beading can be very time consuming.

What sort of experience does she have and what style is she looking for? What materials does she want to use? Is this something that she wants to do long term after the wedding? That would be cool!

    I want pictures!!!

I know a girl who made her own dress, and it turned out lovely. Her biggest issue was finding a pattern that she liked, but was still in her skill range, and then finding fabrics that were pretty, easy to work with, and still wedding-y. She swears it wasn't so bad other than the initial stress though, so that is promising.

Nice to have a groom join us- we don't have many grooms around Smiley smile

I'm all for a good DIY but I think that's a HUGE undertaking with the wedding only 4 months away!! I personally would not risk that. Best of luck to her though and if she does, tell her to come on here and post pictures!
