Wedding ceremony and reception dilema

Stephanie, on February 16, 2017 at 10:32 Posted in Wedding ceremony 0 35

Hello Everyone.

So I've been trying to find the perfect affordable venue for my ceremony and reception. Wanted to keep it one location to avoid travel cost and easier for out of towners. The thng is, since we are tight on budget we cant just take any place. This I can live with. But what really bothers me is the fact I want a small wedding, 45 people in ttl max, and I get kindly rejected left right and center becasue most places in Montreal, Quebec need a minimum of 100 or more guests. I have found 2 places that seem great (visiting them next week). L'Ambroisie et L'Espace Canal and The University Club of Montreal. I am just ranting here but I get they need a certain income from a wedding. I dont want to feel like Im getting the second best here because I have less guests.

Has this frustration happen to anyone?

Cheers,

Stephanie

Hello, I believe it was $750 or $800 for the day and night. It includes round tables and chairs. It's a beautiful old brick venue with a lake right next to it. It's a very old building but beautiful. There is no AC. You will have to find your own caterer and they also have a bar in the venue also to make drinks.
You can only start booking a year in advance. So say you were getting married on August 5th 2018, you can only book as of August 5th 2017. It is first come first served. The opening starts at 8am I believe. The woman told me she has people lining up at 2am to ensure they get their date.
Any other questions, just let me know Smiley smile

Hey Louise! Just discovered this place last night and trying to gather as much info as possible before calling them on monday. Do you remember the rental cost per hour? And I saw somewhere that it had to be booked a year in advance, is this true? Thanks.

Yes, it's really very nice! Another place I forgot to mention that might be worth checking out, particularly if you or your partner or someone you know graduated, studying or working at McGill - the McGill faculty club or Thompson house. You may not need to fit those criteria, but maybe you do in order to get a better deal. The McGill grounds can be very lovely Smiley smile I am going to start seriously looking at caterers too, we really liked la Vieille Brasserie!

Hi Kacy, Thank you for the long detailed description. when I told Eric about the place he raved about it. I went to see Club University of montreal. But I don't know. I guess I'm an outdoorsy person. I liked the venue but I'm not sure. I'm waiting on a price quote but I'm seeing L'Ambroisie Thursday. As for La Veille Brasserie, I sent emails on caterers to find out if there price with this venue would work for me. I rather book 1 year in advance to remove the stress. I do have a year and a half before the big day. But I think Eric is leaning more towards La Veille Brasserie. Outdoor wedding and nice reception.

Hi there, I haven't forgotten about you! Basically, La Vieille Brasserie is sooooooo nice! It comes equipped with 110 chairs, and enough tables for that many as well (their capacity is 110 from fire hazard POV). The cost to rent for someone who lives in Montreal (not West Island, for instance) is 73$/hr, or 102$/hr for someone outside of the borough Montreal. Though you could just as easily go with someone who lives in Montreal, and they will give that rate. After 1 pm, the cost of rental is 310$/hr so that could get pricey.

There is another room that could be rented for a flat rate of 64$/day, which is small, and has more tables, and could be used as a small ceremony space or for storage. The space that is included is: the main floor, and upstairs, which accommodates all together 110 people. There is also a balcony/terrace on the second floor that is available year-round (if in winter, you would just need to shovel if you'd like to use it). There is a kitchen, with a fridge, stove/oven (if I remember correctly) and counter space for caterers. What else... oh yes, it's on the water, and there is a door to access outside from the main floor directly on to the boardwalk, and two parking lots, with enough spaces for abour 40-50 cars. You would need to bring in sound equipment, and there isn't any AC, but there are windows/doors that could be opened, but it could get hot in the summer. As Louise mentioned, you can only reserve one year in advance; i.e. if you would like to get married during the month of June 2018, you'd have to reserve on June 1st, 2017. We were told that during the 'high wedding season' some people camp outside in order to get their date. Anyways, I think that is all, if I missed anything, I will let you know!

My problem was the opposite. We got engaged in June and started looking in July for a September 2017 wedding. The fact that I couldn't book on the day we visited gave me anxiety. I was worried by September there would be nothing left haha. I'm a huge planner and organiser.
We went with Auberge des Gallants instead Smiley smile Stress free.

Thanks Louise for the insight. I can definetly understand that it can give you anxiety from commuting a year in advance. I'm having feeling the same about the photographer or videographer. They get booked so quickly. In my case September should be okay. It may even rain haha.

La Vielle Brasserie is so nice and rustic. You would have to get catering in as you only get the hall. You also have a balcony overlooking the canal and they have a cute bar. They have a downstairs area that you could use as a cocktail area/hang out area.
It's a lovely space but it has no AC so it does get very hot in there- they can open windows though.
The only thing I had trouble with there is that you can only reserve a year in advance and it is first come first serve. The idea of that gave me anxiety and we decided against that.
It totally depends on your wedding day and if it is high season. Good luck guys!

So far I'm interested in seeing the following: l'ambroisie et l'espace canal
University Club of MontrealHotel NelliganMontreal Canvas loftLa Vieille Brasserie (can't believe how cheap it is to rent this one. It's such a beautiful rustic place too! Cheaper then my cultural center near me)
I have booked appointments with them all except the last one for now.
    Thanks again ladies for suggestions.

I know someone else has already mentioned it, but are you super set on your date? It might be easier to find a place to deal with a smaller guest list during the off-season. That's what we had to do because everywhere was minimum 100+ on the weekends during peak season, but our list is maxed out at 50.

I got a response finally last night. They don't have a kitchen for the smaller room since I'm only Max 45. *face balm* oh well. I got at least 2 more venues on my list. I appreciate everyone's feedback.

Yes! Totally forgot to mention that place! It's BYOA too, with no corkage fee, no cake-cutting fee, which is awesome Smiley smile they do all sorts of receptions, but are really into cocktail receptions.

You should check out Canvas in Lachine. There is no minimum number and their food is great. I looked at this place. It was one of my top 3 places.

La Vielle Brasserie in Lachine is beautiful. They have a balcony that overlooks the water. I visited that place as a potential venue.

Hey! Yes I find it SO SO SO annoying to have a minimum revenue charge, ugh!!! I am also in Montreal and looking for a venue with a tight budget, but for a larger guest list. Where are you looking, what type of venue, preferred date, etc? I have sent out so many emails, some haven't answered, some have, maybe I could send you what I have if it fits your criteria?
I am looking at restaurants and other such venues.. I have found a few that are potentials because they don't have a minimum, such a resto Lordia, Villa Toscana, reception hall Paragon (this one hasn't replied to me), La Vieille Brasserie Lachine, Crowley arts centre, etc. Thinking of other places that were too small for me... H4C in st Henri, Chateau Ramezay I think, others as well!
Anyways- Message me if you'd like, we can put our heads together!

I ran into this a bit too! We didn't expect more than 90 guests, and a lot of places said "fine, but pay for 100"....ummmm no.

We chose a restaurant, and most restaurants we spoke to were much more flexable, and most had a ceremony space of some sort too. OR you can use a park (like I am Smiley winking )

Now I see Lindsey had all that covered. Nevermind me then.
