Numerous couples freeze a layer for a full year, and all say it was as delicious as ever.
When I have frozen cakes for events, I generally freeze it un decorated and then decorate at a day or two before. On one event when I froze it decorated, after it was cool placed it in the fridge for about half an hour then wrapped it before putting it in the freezer. Defrost in the fridge, you can defrost in room temperature, I prefer in the fridge.
