Wedding 911

I'm in a bit of a dilemma. I booked a beautiful, unique wedding space only to hear in the news that the wedding venue was shut down! It seems as though a third party was actually handling all the events out of that space and it wasn't the venue themselves. According to the contract the third party, at their sole discretion, must find us a new venue. They have found us 2 possible places but they are basic banquet halls and that is exactly the thing my fiance and I were running away from. The third party says that if I don't go with their choices I am cancelling my contract and will loose my $2000 deposit. I really don't know what to do and our wedding is 10 months away. I really don't think its fair that someone else is going to determine where I get to have this very important and special day. Does anyone have any pointers or know if what he's doing is right and legal? Any thoughts are welcome. Thanks!

I have heard of wedding insurance and this would be a case for them to handle since the 3rd party iant wantonf to refund your money. It would be wise to look it up. Hope all works out and you don't lose your deposit.

I didn't hear about this but this sounds absolutely horrible. In Manitoba we didn't have a scam artist like this person sounds but a wedding barn burnt down and so many people lost their venue they booked. I was hoping to get married their as well but unfortunately its gone. Good luck with finding a positive solution! I hope it works in your favor.

Definitely get a lawyer to scan the contract. They might be able to see minor discrepancies and enough of those can equal the deposit back at least. I totally understand not wanting a banquet hall, as me and my FH avoided those as well! The space needs to be special for you on such a big day.

I would talk to a lawyer about the contract. I think that if none of these venues appeal to you and that you can afford to lose the $2,000 then you have to think really hard about it. It is not ideal but maybe there is a way that you could make on the banquet halls work for you?

Omg you are one of the brides from Sarcoa aren't you.. I'm so sorry to hear this, when we read it in the paper we felt so bad for all of the brides. Unfortunately if its in the contract they will most likely take your deposit if you don't go with their picks, which is ridiculous. If you can afford to lose the deposit, and go with a venue of your choice I would do that. Then I would also take them to small claims and try to get your deposit back that way. Make sure you keep all correspondence between them and also the newspaper articles, see if you can contact any of the other brides, and see what they are doing. If it is Sarcoa, wasn't that property actually owned by the City of Hamilton?

Good. That guy was a con artist. Do you know anyone that can look over the contract for you? If it's legally binding, you might end up having to take the banquet hall. But the lawyer might find something in it that makes the contract void. It's worth a try.

You could get a lawyer to look at the contract. Maybe he can find a loophole, but at any rate, he could tell you what's legal and what isn't. Is this 3rd party's name Erastus, by any chance?
