Vendors taking advantage of couples during Covid 19

Maria, on May 15, 2020 at 12:25 Posted in Plan a wedding 0 17

Hey everyone. I just want to hear everyone’s thoughts on this topic because it has caused my fiancé and I significant stress and a lot of added frustration and uncertainty since it happened and I’m looking for other people who this has happened to, to weigh in and share their thoughts. Planning a wedding during this crazy pandemic can feel very lonely at times! Looking for some support I guess.

Anyway, here goes my story for anyone interested:
My Fiance and I had booked our Wedding at a Venue in Grimsby, ON, run by a Mr. Patrick Gabriel. Our wedding was booked for August 22 2020and due to the pandemic we decided that we would have to move it to 2022 at least. We had already paid a $500 deposit in August of 2019 to secure the date.
When we contacted Mr. Gabriel to inquire about rescheduling the wedding for 2022, we were met with these two options: Either book for 2021 at an increased cost ($500 on top of what we had already agreed to pay for the August 22, 2020 date) or book in 2022 at a $700minimumincrease.
The Venue's fee was $2850 plus tax when we booked. This means if we wanted to book our wedding in 2022, we would have to pay $3550 plus tax minimum.
He also confirmed that we would NOT get our deposit back if we chose to cancel. When my Fiance called to discuss this further. Mr. Gabriel disconnected the call in the middle of the conversation.
This sort of behaviour is absolutely despicable and Mr. Gabriel is clearly using this pandemic event as an opportunity to quite frankly, extort people. Mr. Gabriel is unwilling to make any sort of accommodations for couples such as my Fiance and I, and instead he is using our precarious situation as an opportunity to line his pockets.

The only problem with rebooking in 2021 is that no one can truly predict if brides like us would not go through all of this again. Might be more prudent for some to wait for a vaccine than risk even the tiniest chance of impacting someone's health and/or causing a potential death...sorry to be morbid. It's even harder to decide especially if ur a bride with some medical conditions that put you at a higher risk.. is it worth it... the love will still be there... sooo hard and a cause for frustration, tears, anxiety and lost sleep...

Has anyone ever sued over a frustrated contract and won in Ontario? I definitely would be curious to know the general view of the court system is right now because of all of this. Are they siding with the businesses or the couples that haven't received anything for their "deposits"? Anyone know?

Honestly this breaks my heart. My venue has been amazing and I’m so sorry for other brides with negative interactions with their venues. This adds extra stress to a very stressful situation. Honestly I would cancel and just lose the $500 deposit. If you’re facing issues in a time like this you need to have vendors that you trust and treat you well! Good luck

The dilemma is terrible and the fact he didn't have a contract, chooses not to do so can result in giving your money back if you were to decide later on to sue him. The loss of the cancellation fee is less than what you have paid forward. Making others aware of his character and actions is good to have not dealt with as a business man.

There are some couples facing the increase amounts themselves through their venue and vendors wanting to put their fine print to use of change without notice so they feel they get the last word. The action for our end as customers can be taken though its not the best to think of it by suing them for cancellation or not using their services.

You're welcome and I totally understand. I spend everyday on here (lol) it's always open in my browser. No one who isn't going through this understands completely so this is the only TRUE outlet a lot of us have during this time.

In that case while it sucks to lose $500, you'll be so much happier with a venue you can trust that it will become money well spent to be rid of him.

Thanks Vanessa! I just want to make sure people know the true character of this person before they entrust their special day to him.
Thank you for your comment, it’s nice to have a community to share this with. Like I said in my post it is a lonely time because no one else can relate in “real” life!

    Thanks Amelia Smiley smile
Unfortunately we don’t have a contract.. I know, we’re stupid. Lol
He said he doesn’t “do that”. I guess I assumed based on good reviews and the fact that he was on Wedding Wire that he was legit and we had nothing to worry about. We have contracts with every other vendor but him.We were just so excited and we should have known better. At this point it’s not even about the money, I’m just mad that there’s someone out there like this taking advantage of the situation. It is beyond disgusting in my opinion. We’ll definitely be taking our business elsewhere.

Sorry that this is happening to you!

I think I read in a comment that you are going to forgo the $500 and I do agree that this is the best option for you. What you said is absolutely ridiculous and vendors like this can't be trusted.

I also saw your rating on wedding wire and good for you, hopefully other people see this before booking and make note of what you wrote.

I hope you can find another venue that suits your needs Smiley smile

Ugh, there have been a few stories like this on here and it's horrible that on top of all the stress of the pandemic vendors are adding to the pile.

If it were me I would review the contract extensively. Even email a copy to a friend to have an extra set of eyes. If there is anything about postponing or rescheduling (with or without fees) you may have something you work with.
If that doesn't work ask if you want to continue working with this vendor. If you would rather not give this *lovely gentleman* (sarcasm) your money then look for another spot. If you're already thinking of pushing to 2022 then you have some time to shop around.

I agree Gloria and unfortunately I think we’ll have to forgo the $500. No way do we trust this man to handle our wedding day in a professional manner. I reported him on wedding wire and they responded basically just encouraging me to leave a review (which I already have). I hope that other people who are in the same boat as us with this venue will have the courage to speak up to get him removed from this website. This is where we found him and I’m worried that other people will fall victim to this.

I didn’t ask because we have people flying in from abroad and there is no way that travel bans will be completely lifter by then - we just didn’t want to chance it.
We thought 2022 would be safest Because by then hopefully this covid nightmare will be over or less of a threat by then and we have a better chance of getting all of our same vendors that we already hired for our wedding to move the date.
He is just completely unprofessional and like I mentioned to Gloria who commented before - he is acting as if we are choosing to reschedule for some other personal reason. It’s like he doesn’t comprehend that you cannot expect people to have a wedding in the middle of a pandemic. He even went so far as to hang up on my fiancé when he called a second time to make sure we understood him right. He literally said “I’m very busy” and hung up the call! This has just been an absolute nightmare and I’m being reduced to tears every day just thinking about the stress of it all and losing our $500 deposit.

I completely understand Smiley sad and I think it is ridiculous as this has never happened and noone really has anything in their contract about how to go about this. Unfortunately, if able, I would just forgot that 500$ and go with a different vendor.... I would personally rather lose my money then work with someone whose left a sour taste in my mouth Smiley sad

Have you asked him what happens if the ban is still (and it most likely will be) around in August instead of trying to rebook now? Is there a rebooking fee if it's not up to you to move it?

I understand that prices go up every year, but at the same time when you book with somebody they usually give you the pricing of whenever you are currently booking so I'm not quite sure why he is being like this... Super unprofessional and I'm sorry you have to deal with such a person.

Thanks for your comment Gloria. He was completely unwilling to work with us unfortunately. Even if we wanted to move to 2021 a) dates are limited for him and for our other vendors and b) he wanted to charge an extra $500 just to do that because that’s the price for that year. He’s handling this the same as he would if we were postponing by choice, which in my mind is unacceptable and disgusting behaviour to be quite frank.
I will be sure to leave reviews and make sure no one else falls prey to this person’s greed.

I'm so sorry to hear Smiley sad . I hear some vendors are doing the same thing... while others have been amazing and more than accommodating. The only "issue" I see is that you want to postpone it for another 2 years. For us, our venue has been great and postponed at no extra charge. I kind of inquired about 2022 (even though id rather not push it back that far), our coordinator wasn't able to give us a final decision as she did not have authorization to re-book for 2022. So that would be my only suggestion I suppose is maybe try for 2021?

As much as it sucks, I have heard other vendors doing similar things and it's ridiculous given that noone has such a thing in their contract. I would reach out to him again and try to come to an agreement. Let them know that how they deal with it will reflect your review of them on social media platforms...ultimately, it is a business and sometimes they have to give a bit in order to maintain business and have a good word all around.
