Travelling to Banff to Vancouver

Kate, on February 2, 2019 at 12:22 Posted in Plan a wedding 0 3

Hi there everyone! I'm just curious how some brides manage to pull off a semi-destination. Our wedding location is almost an 8 hour drive for most of our family and friends (ourselves included) and I'm beggining to wonder about the transportation difficulties we might have to face. Of courese if I could afford to fly everyone out I would, but I'll need alot more lottery tickets for that happen lol! So I guess the next plausible course of action is to either rent a bus or get a car caravan started somehow. Anyone else face this type of problem? I'd love any advice or anecdotes of do's and don'ts, thanks!

This isn't really a solution per se but I just wanted to throw out there that if your ceremony and reception venues are close together/the same location, and you're inviting everyone to join you at a destination location city, you are not obligated to transport them. It would be the same if this was a full destination wedding. It's really helpful to provide your guests with information to help make their travel easy to book, to look for group discount rates, suggest easy routes of travel and good hotels etc... and you could choose to provide all the transportation for the wedding day once your guests are all out there in your destination city, but the couple does not have to pay to bring all their guests to their destination wedding. Just a thought to consider! That being said for my celebration of marriage which was 45 min from my DH's family home we rented two big busses to pick everyone up from their hotels and bring them to the venue and home again after - but that was only 45 min drive, and we didn't transport anyone from their homes to the hotels, that was up to each guest.

My venue is about 45 minutes outside the perimeter and guests already love the idea of getting a bus for them! If they have to get a room for the night though I wouldn't worry too much about transportation though as they may want to stay longer or leave early in the morning.

Maybe put that out there to get a feel from your guests first?

Congratulations on your engagement! Welcome to the Wedding Wire community!

Out ceremony and reception are at one venue so once our guests do get to our destination city they don’t have to travel too much on the day of the wedding. We’re based in Toronto and getting married in Victoria, so all but 2 families are coming from abroad.

From my experience in the planning process so far, it’s important to have travel/accommodation details on your website or in your invitations. We also added a section that dealt with transportation options (taxi, car rental etc.), since many of our guests come from cities with car sharing services like Uber and Lyft, and it’s not offered where we’re getting married. We got discounts from hotels with a range of price points. We chose not to get a hotel block because we wanted people to have options.

If you can arrange for shuttle/school/coach bus to transport guests from a central area to the wedding, do so, but I think ultimately it’s up to guests to make their own arrangements. You may even want to send your save the dates and invitations a bit earlier to give guests time to plan.

Finally, we booked a vacation home for my immediate family to stay in, as kind of a “home base”. My parents, brother and his kids, and some aunts will stay there, at a pretty discounted cost, and they’ll have more space and be able to cook.
