Too soon for alterations ?

Missa, on September 10, 2018 at 14:52 Posted in Wedding fashion 0 9

Hi everyone, another day, another question!

I picked up my dress and my shoes at Davids Bridal yesterday and I wanted to schedule an appointment for my alterations but the girl I was dealing with advised me that it was too early as my wedding is only next summer. I get it, however - we are currently living in Ontario and we are getting married in New-Brunswick. My mother will be visiting this fall and I would have liked to give her my dress to bring home so I didn't have to fly with the dress next summer.

Also - the only alteration I require on my dress is the length and the bustle. I was debating with adding in a sewed in bra but I'm really comfortable with my strapless everytime I try it in. My dress is laced up in the bank and it can go up two sizes or down two sizes so, other than the length I don't see what other alterations I may need therefore Im not sure why I have to wait until next may/june..

Any thoughts? Smiley smile

I may be able to find someone back home that is cheaper but, other than Christmas, I'm not going again before the wedding... I could look into it though.

As for the shoes, I'm a size 5 and these shoes were hard enough to find so I think I'll stick with them hahaha

I would personally wait. You said it’s just the bustle and hemmed. But what if you decide to change the shoes between now and next summer? It’s a minor alteration so I would wait. Or see if you can find a seamstress back home that is willing to do the work. There is a good chance she’s cheaper than David’s which will probably charge you over $200 just for the hem.

If it's an a-line dress with a corset, and you're fairly consistent with your weight/size, then go ahead and do your alterations.

I'm the same as Gina, where mine is trumpet, so it's going to be a very detailed alteration all the way down the dress... also, I'm in the middle of losing a bunch of weight, so I have no idea what size I'm going to be by the time of my first alteration appointment in November.

You know better than anyone if you feel comfortable with the fit of your dress... so if it's just your seamstress that made you do a double take, just ignore her and send the dress with your mom.

Also, I would strongly suggest getting the cups sewn in... just out of simplicity. But it's up to you.

    Good luck!

As long as you are going to be monitoring your diet and exercise as to not shift your weight around then it should be fine. If anything see about a last minute alteration place in NB in case you do have to take it in a bit more or take it out a bit more. Otherwise you may as well get it done now Smiley smile

    Hi Gina,

It's a chiffon A-line dress so, I honestly don't know what else I'd change on the dress.

    Thank you Smiley smile

Thank you, that's what I thought but, they seem to know better. I doubt my height will suddenly change!!

I think it really Depends on the style of dress you have. If it’s a mermaid or trumpet style, then I wouldn’t get it altered until you’re closer to your wedding. Mine is a trumpet style with a corset back. it’s tighter in the bum and hip area, so those need to be proper size and aren’t adjustable. Now if you have an A-line dress or a ball gown, I don’t think it would be as big of a deal because it’s not fit to your body and like you said, the corset back is adjustable by a couple sizes. Hope that helps a bit lol

If those are your only alterations, I would get them done now. Then your mom can take your dress back in the fall.

Mine came in August and I need the shoulders/bodice taken in a little bit, as well as the length and bustle. I'm gonna start going for alterations in the new year (spring/summer)
