Tipping

Fiona, on August 19, 2019 at 07:07 Posted in Plan a wedding 0 12
What's everyone's options for tipping their vendors? (Dj, photographer etc) I will be tipping my hair and make up girls however I am not sure of the others. I am hearing different things from people. I feel like with my photographer and DJ, we are paying for their plate which is expensive as it is.
What's everyone's thoughts on this?

It most certainly does help! I have a few friends that tipped everyone had the envelopes ready etc.. and then I have some friends that tipped certain people. I got alot of great feedback from everyone!
    Thanks again!

On a FB group I’m in there was a similar post to this. All the vendors who commented said they never expect a tip, it’s nice, but not required! They said that they build their prices carefully to make a wage they expect and that it’s nice if couples throw in their meal or something as well, but again not mandatory.

Another bride had commented on the formentioned post and said she had a tip envelope ready for each vendor and if she was over the moon happy about the service provided she would give it, and if not, then not!

    Hope that helps ☺️

The general rule of thumb is that you should tip people who are employees from a company, and don’t tip the person if they are the owner of the company (since they make their own prices). For example, I wouldn’t tip Rocco from Rocco’s DJ Services, but if it was Jenny from Big DJ Company, then I’d tip her.

Because tips are never included in the cost for vendors. You should be tipping everyone. We are doing a standard 15% for everyone.

Tipping vendors that don't have gratuity included in their contract is fair to do so and not double tipping based on contract.

    Vendors to Tip:

    DJ

    Videographer

    Photographer

    Hair/Make up artist

Bartenders & Waitstaff (unless venue has their staff paid from the gratuity amount). Bartenders not getting tips if they have a jar for tips given by your guests.

Vendors not getting tipped or tipped based on:

Florist not tipped since they have their services paid time before the event

Venue not tipped since gratuity is included in contract

Staff under the actual vendor not tipped unless the actual individual brings them with them.

Keeping in mind if you are going to feed the vendor and have to pay for their meal, the tip may not be required to give them. Its altering the payment to provide a meal on your side based on contract bases. Something to consider which I did and didn't tip any vendors at all in replacement for meals.

If it's in their contracts that they are to be fed then I would tip on top of it, but if it isn't then the tip can be less than what you were going to give.

When it comes to these vendors I go case by case. If they are the sole person for the company (aka their own boss) then I would at most tip like $50. (I don't/can't afford to tip based off of percentage.)

DJ - mine isn't from a company, she is her own boss - therefore she sets her own prices and her tip is the meal we are providing for her*

Photographer - mine isn't from a company, she is a friend actually - therefore I will not be tipping her*

*tips will be made if the vendor goes above and beyond and this tip would be made at the end of their service.
