Thoughts on videography?

Abbie, on January 8, 2021 at 22:57 Posted in Plan a wedding 0 13
FH and I were talking and we don’t feel the need for a wedding video that is professionally edited and cut to music, however, we would really love the ceremony and speeches recorded so we can look back at them. In this case, do you think it makes sense to have a trusted guest just record these things on a video camera or does that sound like too big an ask for a guest, or too much of a risk for technical error?

I'll keep that in mind when looking for a photographer - I know not everyone does both! I'm a photographer myself but not at all a talented videographer haha!

Agreed with what many people have said on here. Personally having video (including raw footage) was super important to me so we went with a videographer. I'm sure guests will have plenty of footage regardless... just be mindful of the fact that it won't be "professional" ... meaning that you may not get the best quality. I personally wouldn't ask my guest to.. but its ultimately up to you.. as many have pointed out, they may forget, get nervous, view blocked, etc..

It would be easier if your photographer also did video so you don't have your guest being interrupted in the whole enjoyment of your day. A student in the college may be helpful to get the footage for a lower cost if that is your desire of memories.

Our video didn't come out as great due to the lack of professionalism in the editing. Our ceremony had music during the whole thing and no words spoken.

That’s a good point - avoiding the stress might be worth the added cost!

I do have a couple of photographer friends and I love the idea of suggesting it as their gift! I would feel less like I was imposing on them that way. Great idea, thank you! Smiley smile

Originally we didn’t plan to have any videography but because we couldn’t have our engagement shoot due to covid, our photographer gave us a highlights reel that we both honestly love so much and can’t imagine not having.
I agree with the others, I’d see if your photographer could set up a camera to catch some footage throughout the day (that’s what ours did!) and then you're covered for your speeches. Then that way you don’t have to worry about your guests getting everything on film.

Absolutely! So worth it. My friend didn’t have one and she regrets it so much! Our video was the most beautiful thing to watch over and over again! Especially the highlight video

We asked a friend who does photography on the side to record our ceremony. Nothing fancy, just a copy for the grandmothers who couldn't be there and didn't know how to use zoom. In all the excitement they forgot their camera gear and we didn't get a video. I really wasn't upset because I didn't want the video for us, I only wanted it to show the grandmothers.

If you want a good copy I would pay someone to capture those moments for you. It will be a lot less stressful than worrying if an amateur will do a good job.

I wouldn't ask a guest unless I knew they had some kind of photography background for something like that, for the very reasons Hank said. I've actually seen some stories where such things have happened and it can be heartbreaking for the bride and groom if it's something that they really wanted to have as a cherished momento. Both FH and I come from photography backgrounds so we know quite a few people that we'd be comfortable asking as they've got all their own equipment and everything and know how to use it. So if you're inviting someone like that then ask them if that's something they'd be willing to do for you, can even suggest it be their gift to you if they're a photographer by profession. But it definitely doesn't hurt to ask the photographer that you've hired already to just set up a stationary tripod so that they can still move about and get the different angles and such for the actual photographs.

That’s totally fair! I didn’t even think of asking the photographer to multi task and just set something up!

If it's just a matter of having a camera sitting still on a tripod, I would ask your photographer. I wouldn't trust a wedding guest for something like this. Their emotions are running high and their minds could be all over the place in the moment. The last thing you want is for a scatterbrained guest to forget to push the button or do something weird like knock the camera over.
