The MOH Saga continues - Veil Fail

Robyn, on March 21, 2019 at 13:53 Posted in Wedding fashion 0 32

So my MOH, also my future sister-in-law (yeah), a.k.a. the dress diva, has let me down yet again. She had volunteered her veil for me to use as my something borrowed, which I was kind of lukewarm about in the first place. She has a habit of just suggesting things and then assuming she has done you a huge favour. Anyway. So she volunteered the veil, and just now, a day before my first fitting for the wedding dress I'm already feeling anxious about, she tells me she lent the veil to someone else for their wedding, and she won't have the veil back for another 2 or 3 weeks.

Are. you. serious.

I dunno. I am kinda angry, because to be honest I don't want to wear this veil that's just being passed around from person to person, apparently - I want it to be special, and now that I think about it, I want my own veil, to be able to give to any daughters I might have *if* they want to use it.

So my question to you wonderful people is: I know I want a cathedral veil to go with this horrible dress, but I'm wonderful if I should go with a raw (plain) edge, a crystal edge, or a lace edge? I'm leaning toward a lace edging that begins somewhere around my hips, rather than lace around the entire perimeter of the veil. Any thoughts would be much appreciated!

The dress:

Hi lovely people - first I want to say thank you so much for all of your messages and support! I was unplugged for the weekend, but reading all your encouraging comments has actually brought tears to my eyes, thank you all so much!

A little update - I went for my dress fitting, and I don't hate my dress! Seeing it in the right size made a huge difference, and I have asked for a few alterations that should make it perfect. My mom, future mother-in-law, and the infamous MOH were all there, and I was able to finally find a backbone and tell my MOH that I would be purchasing my own veil, but thank you for offering hers. She was surprised and a little irritated, but overall took it much better than I expected!

I tried on a few veils, all cathedral length, and ended up picking one that has the same edging as the skirt on my gown, but, PLOT TWIST, I decided to go with a blush as well! I know it's super traditional, but as soon as I put it on it felt right. I know my FH will love it too. I remember watching Prince Harry lift Meghan's veil at the altar and just bawling my eyes out, so I think I made the right decision

There are veils with similar edges to the tulle on that dress, I think that would be perfect and it wouldn’t distract from the detail on the top

Hi Robyn, how did the fitting go? I think you can go with the sentimental value of wanting to pass it down and perhaps your mom making you a veil as to why you don't want to use her veil. A simple veil would be better than a lacey one.

    Hi Robyn!

I had some serious doubts about my dress a while ago and you really helped me out. You suggested to go back with someone I really feel close to and it’s exactly what I did. Your MOH seems like a real piece of work (I followed your saga lol) and I know it can be really hard to have someone this selfish around you for your wedding. But it’s still YOUR wedding. I think you should maybe not invite her for the most important stuff so you can think without her unwanted opinion.

Aw the idea of your Mom making the veil would be so nice! and that would be SO much more meaningful.

Try not to feel guilty for turning town her 'generous offers' lol It's you day...if she cant deal with you saying no to her then that's her problem. Have you told her you aren't going to use hers? How did she take it. ahhhhhhh the drama haha

Btw, from an outsiders perspective, your dress looks fantastic on you! Hopefully at your fitting you love it Smiley smile

I really like simple veils, especially with a busy dress. Perhaps something like this would go well with your dress. I agree though, I would only want borrow a veil if the "borrowing" was special, not as a passaround... Good luck!

I love lace so I am drawn to that idea but I have no idea how to match veil to dress 🤷🏻‍♀️😂 So I’ll just go ahead and void my opinion. Your dress bottom is the same as mine and I’m struggling with veil style too. Maybe at your fitting you could see if there are some samples to try against the dress?

Yes, the dress is too busy for lace I think. Thanks!

Agreed - I'm thinking one with a very minimal edge or even a raw edge with random crystals throughout.

Thanks, Tori Smiley smile I have felt guilty saying no to her many generous "offers" but I'm kinda glad it turned out like this. I want my own veil - and everyone needs a bit of sparkle!

I'm thinking a raw edge too - maybe one that has two tiers, even? The bodice on the dress is enough Smiley smile

It's a pretty dress (and thank you for your kind words) but it's just not *me*

Tomorrow is my first fitting, though, I am hoping that seeing it in the right size on my body, with the accessories and everything all together, will make me love it.

You don’t like your dress? I’ll trade you hahah! I would go with something with a little sparkle, it’ll add a little pop with your dress. And I agree , you should get your own. A veil is so simple but I has deep meaning to it when it’s passed down!

This dress looks beautiful on you! I would go with the crystal edge. Add a little bit more sparkle to the dress. I think a lace edge would be too much going on with all the details in the dress.

My opinion would be a raw edged veil - only reason is that you don't want to take away from the dress.
In regards to your MOH - I would just go buy a veil and if she said anything about it, I would tell her that you decided you wanted to possibly pass it down to your future kids if you are to have any. If she gets upset.... then oh well! I wouldn't stress over it! In the end it's your wedding, not hers.

Your dress is so beautiful with the 3D appliqués, I'm afraid the lace edge would be distracting from the main feature. I'd go crystal edge (which I am doing by the way) because you can never have enough tasteful sparkle, or plain unfinished edge. Whatever you choose should reflect your own style and preference ~

My salon threw in a raw edge veil cathedral length for free with my purchase, but I purchased a crystal edge veil from Wish for the bargain price of $19.00. It arrived and its soft a beautiful. The gems are glued on but you would have to really inspect it to see, but the sparkle is amazing!

Good luck and happy veil hunting.

A plain edge would really highlight all the details you have in your dress. A crystal edge would add some sparkle but may take away from the detail a bit and same with the lace edge.

I vote crystal edge, the dress has enough going on (it is beautiful by the way) you need a simple veil.

I would either go with a crystal edge. You don't want the plain one to get lost in your dress and plus... sparkles! lol

P.S. Just so you know, I completely agree with going with your own. You don't need this added headache and you've got a good reason to want your own!

Your dress is amazing! I personally think a raw edge would look great because your dress has so much beautiful detail already. My FSIL isn’t even coming to our wedding, which is a relief lol

I know absolutely nothing about veils so I can't offer any advice...however I want to send positive thoughts for dealing with your MOH! Frustrating that she's so difficult for you!!

But...you don't love your dress?!? It's pretty!! It's very similar to my cousin's dress, and she looked stunning on her wedding day, and you will too!! (I think a veil that can be pinned into your hair would look lovely with this dress...however, again, I know nothing about them haha)

Talk to your seamstress - they can make veils a lot cheaper than you can buy them
