Stag and Doe

Justine, on October 25, 2019 at 19:07 Posted in Plan a wedding 0 5

We are trying to plan a stag and doe - but there seems to be a lot of things you cannot do in Ontario anymore. You no longer can do door prizes, raffles, 50/50 etc - as these are all "chance" games therefore considered to be a gambling act, which AGCO does not permit for events such as stag and does.

That being said, I know these events are still quite popular here - so I am wondering what games you have at your events along with prizes? We were recently informed that there cannot be any prizes of alcohol anymore, which takes away from the possibility of doing drink tickets/shots/Texas Mickey etc. Any helpful suggestions from your own experiences would be greatly appreciated!! I live in Manitoba so we are allowed to have these raffles at our Socials as long as we have the proper permits - but what about doing a silent auction instead of a raffle?

Like instead of selling tickets to put in for a chance to win a "basket" you have papers and pens with people bidding on it? Would that be legal?

That's strange to hear that Stag and Doe is changing up rules for events. This didn't have any effect when our MOHs planned our Buck & Buck back in June 2017. The venue allowed raffles, 50/50 draw and the baskets along with the booze bottles too.

If the case is that the venue isn't allowing these gambling ideas due to the fact they don't want to be held accountable/liable for their actions.

The prizes can be hand delivered to the individuals if they live in town or meet some place that is a fair distance the day after the event or for lunch/dinner when you see them next.

When we did a stag and doe the guy that checks (no idea who he would be) said you can have pictures of alcohol just couldn't bring alcohol not on the liquor licence into the building. We had to keep it in someone's trunk and give it when they left. However they had no problem with raffles and everything else. It was 5 years ago. So I'm not even sure what you can do about that.

We are currently in the same boat, however some of our friends have suggested still doing door prizes (with the purchase of a ticket) but just delivering the item the next day...
