Small wedding planning venue Help!

Danni, on May 20, 2019 at 12:36 Posted in Plan a wedding 0 8
I just got engaged May 4th after being together for almost 7 years.
I am 24 and known to plan everything like crazy so I’ve known what theme and style of wedding I’ve wanted since a few years into the relationship when we both knew we would get married.

Neither of us have the money or want for a big wedding and would likely only have 25-30 people so getting a wedding venue and paying a few grand seems kind of crazy to me, but I’m not sure about all the legality of weddings. Honestly I have no clue what I’m doing at all really!
I want an outdoor wedding with lots of plants or at least something nature related if it is indoors like a green house etc. What I’m wondering is can you do something like have it in a park area without having to call the city to make arrangements. How do you go about finding and getting unconventional wedding venues?

I just kept looking up venues that weren't too expensive. Originally we wanted a barn cause we wanted it to be rustic but they were all thousands plus you had to use their catering which cost even more. It took a couple of weeks of googling before I found it. And it's not in the city where we live. I live in regina. Moose jaw is about 45 min away, so it's not too far away.

Did you just know of the park already or did you look up parks, because I would like to have it in a park too for that same reason but I know the parks where I live aren’t what I’m looking for but it’s difficult to find them in other cities by googling.

We're getting married in a park in Moose Jaw, SK. Technically we booked the Gazebo in the park but we are only having the reception in the gazebo and the ceremony in the park. We didn't need a permit. We just need a permit for the alcohol and one if we want to use the fire pit that is in the park. To book the venue for a day and a half was around $600. Way less than any where else we looked!

    Congrats on your engagement!!

I would say that the others have offered some great ways - the only thing I'm not sure about is the having a wedding in a park. I know that most parks that I looked into require an event permit - not too much money though, just a few hundred dollars.

There's tons of resources here on Wedding Wire that list tons of venues in Barrie (assuming you want to get married in your current city). If you don't find what you're looking for, I'd do a general search for outdoor wedding venues in Barrie and call places to see what they offer. I'm not a fan of the public park route since it's too unpredictable.

There are a few parks with different areas that can accommodate what you want to have for your wedding. Centennial Park is a nice place and inquire about permits needed. Restaurants are a way to cut costs for décor and floral since it would be for a few hours.

The only costs that will incur are food/alcohol, DJ, videographer, photographer and officiant. Knowing a friend or family member that help with any of the recording or photos can also save the cost.

City halls can also fit the number your looking into and have the wedding you want with the cost of the officiant included vs. paying an officiant to come out.

I believe to have a ceremony in a public park you do not need any sort of permit but to have a reception or anything like that you would need one. I'd still call city hall and confirm this because everywhere, every city and every park may have different rules about it.

The only issue with doing it in a public area is you will have strangers walking by and getting in photos and maybe lingering to watch you get married and legally they have every right to. So it wouldn't necessarily be a private wedding.
If you want to have a private wedding and find a venue that fits your wants ask them about their week day or off season prices. Week days and off season (October to March, typically) are so much cheaper!!

I’m from Vancouver and what I found out when I was researching public areas like parks here is you DO need to inform the city if you want to get married in a public park. Here in YVR, the number is people is restricted (25 ppl) so that will work well in your favour if it’s the same where you are located. Also, there was a minor charge (I believe is was less than $100). But there were restrictions on what you could bring the space, time spent there, etc.
Vancouver is a bigger city though so I’m sure the municipal bylaws will be different depending on the size of your town.

    hope this helps!
