Small Town Slow Down?

Helen, on May 30, 2018 at 19:54 Posted in Plan a wedding 0 13

So we are getting married in a small town of 5,000 where everyone is so friendly and super slow paced. 3 of my main vendors (rentals, floral, food) all haven't gotten my quotes back, even though we went up there 6 wks ago and met with all and were told we'd have responses within a week. (I've followed up a few times). Not a lot of options in this one horse town, so I can't really go elsewhere.

They all come highly recommended and all have said they are for sure booked for me for that day, but I am getting pretty stressed. Especially since I have no idea even what to budget for flowers (so I may make changes based on what the amount is), and we can't get meal choices with our RSVPs because I don't have a menu. Heck we may not even have our rentals so ...

Any other city gals struggling with the country pace?

Super frustrating! I've tried to be pretty laid back and for the most part let the vendors set their deadlines (I'd disagree if it wasn't acceptable and work with them on a realistic timeline) but those dates are what I am relying on. Its time to simply say you have xx days to respond now that we are down to the wire and I have started resourcing other vendors in case I get cut off!

So this is fun... after over a month of waiting for our "custom" menu- its the same stuff on the previous one, with a higher price and filled with items I am allergic to! I have laughed and cried but am still too angry to reply.

We are about to switch our venue but 3 mos out and our guests having booked airfares/hotels etc the options are limited and I'm hitting full ginger! So if you're stressed about your planning, pls take a moment to appreciate that you are not alone and it could be worseSmiley smile

I would be blunt with them! I only booked with vendors after finding out the quotes and if I didn’t get my calls within the timelines then I kept calling. You will be paying good money for their services, don’t feel bad about doing what needs done. My flower place is very high quality and also small town as well. I did get quotes from them right off the bat but they said they’d call and confirm with me, which I ended up doing and still need to double check about a sample bouquet and the details.. so I get What you’re saying. It’s frustrating when I’m budgeting 500-600$ on them and am not getting the feed back that I want.

We pulled that card with the venue and got "some" results in all the other areas other than the menu. We were really happy with the concessions they made (the venue changed hands and the coordinator changed 3 times so a lot of communication challenges. We almost pulled the plug when we traveled up in April- partly for the reason that we could find a new venue while we were there if needed).

For rentals we could go elsewhere locally and bring them up with us, but it will cost us a lot more to have them for a week while we are all away so I'd like to avoid it. Flowers I could re-source- guess I should source a new vendor first before I pull the plug and end up with nothing! Wouldn't that be a mess.

Thanks for the advice, I do that at work all the time... guess its the same in my real life too huhSmiley smile

We even went up (5 hr drive) in April before it got too busy, to sort out some of the delays we had experienced figuring face-to-face would have helped. I'll stay on them!

Osoyoos, BC-- we are working with the Director at the hotel(so with all the layers there is still room to go up), but for the other 2 we are dealing with the owners.

They don't seemed worried at allSmiley smile 3 months to go!

I think some of the delay may be that wedding high season is ramping up so they may be extra busy. I would try calling them and then immediately following up your conversation with an e-mail that recaps the phone call and asking for confirmation.

We had somewhat of an issue with some of our vendors as well taking far too long to get back to us. Remind them kindly in an email that you are hiring them for a service and would appreciate a response or you will need to move on. I understand you don't have many options but maybe the threat of potentially losing business might move their behinds!

Toronto based getting married in Victoria,BC.
We were warned that folks had a more laid back approach, but it’s a challenge when you don’t here back from someone for weeks and you just want to move along with the process.

I'm from a fairly small town and I'm a super organizer and planner. I think I'd go crazy if I were you and right now I'm praising my little town for being great with the timelines!

Where are you getting married? Is it possible to call someone "higher up" at these places?

It's funny that I'm having the opposite problem! We are country bumpkins getting married in a city and I just think it's crazy how quick everyone is to get back to us and wants to set up meetings even though our wedding is just under a year away! Here's hoping we can both find a happy medium!
