Sketchy videographer

Adamay, on September 8, 2018 at 02:56 Posted in Plan a wedding 0 8

Hi,

I recently found a videographer for our wedding through instagram. I emailed him, got an informal quote, and basic information. However, the thing that concerns me is that I cannot find any online presence of them -- other than their instagram and their Vimeo. The only contact information I have is their email address. No phone number, no address, no online reviews.

How can I go about this to see if this videographer is actually legit? Should I ask for references? What other methods do you all suggest? I'm planning this wedding from California, so there is no way that I can verify in person. I just want to make sure my money is getting into good hands Smiley sad

I may just be naive but knowing me I would have chalked that up to them possibly being busy doing videography for a wedding as it was a weekend - but for them not to get back to you today on the Sunday... well unless they just don't reply at all on the weekend or have a Sunday wedding (as rare as they are), I would have to drop them too :/

    Good luck on your search!

Right after I made this post, I sent them an email asking for references or maybe some online reviews. Prior to this email, they would respond to me so quickly! Usually after 1 or 2 hours. But after I sent my last email, I haven't heard from them since. I think that proves their sketchiness. I'm glad I did my due diligence before setting anything in stone!

I wouldn't move on too soon though - there is always the chance that they are legit. If they are willing to talk over the phone and/or send you a contract then I would say that it's not too weird that they only have instagram and vimeo. Is it unprofessional? maybe a little because it takes nothing to just make a simple website even if it is on weebly - but at the same time most of the venues I was looking at didn't have websites at all.

I would move on, especially if they are dodgy on their references. It wouldn't be worth losing your money. Do you have anyone back home who could go check them out? I would try that and then move on if they are sketchy

Yeah, I have sent out an email to them asking for references and ant online reviews they have. I liked the videography style and prices were in my price range. Guess it was too good to be true Smiley ups I'd rather just continue my search than risk having my money go down the drain

Why do you want this particular person? Personally I would stay away. Not only do you not want to be scammed but you want someone who has experience. Not someone who’s decided to just try something out.

Anyone who had experience would have a presence somewhere. You would be able to find at least a couple reviews. And having no phone number or address is a huge red flag.

    my advice, find someone else.

I would inquire about information you're looking into and get referneces too.

If not provided, move on to another company.

Before sending any money I would first ask for the written contract so that if they do have one then it’s more likely they are not so sketchy. Also I would ask for references, because that way you can find out more about them. Just be aware that what if they asked a friend to give them a fake reference that would be my only concern not being able to meet them in person. Also maybe see if someone back home could go check them out if you are in the states.
