Silly colour question

Maya, on July 3, 2018 at 09:31 Posted in Plan a wedding 0 25
So I had originally wanted red and black to be my colours to represent my indigenous culture. I was going to get red bridesmaid dresses, but I’m worried if the red comes in a little lighter than the swatch it won’t be the right red. So we have decided to go with Navy blue bridesmaid dresses.

I haven’t been to many weddings lately, and we are not hiring a decorator. I’m just wondering should the bridesmaid dress colour tie in with the overall decor?

I’m glad to hear that I’m not doing something totally strange. I wasn’t 100% sure if there was some rule about it having to match or not.

My bridesmaids dresses are not part of the decor either.

I am a very "matchy-matchy" person and so it my FH so the colour, teal, for our bridesmaid dresses is also the same colour being used for the napkins. Because it is such a bright overly powering colour i chose a softer accent colour, blush, to be used for the rest of the decor and flowers.

Navy and black are both versatile colours, so I don't think their is any issue with the bridesmaids wearing navy and using black and red for the rest of the decor.

Sounds lovely! You had said Winter in Edmonton? How about some simple vases (we got cylinders from the dollar store) with black rocksin the bottom (we bought some from Michael's, I would wait for a coupon!) With come long wintery branches in the rocks, around the base of the branches you could use the same navy lace with some little lights in with the lace. Or you could use red pillar candles in a cylinder vase with the navy lace around the base of either the candle or vase. Or the other way around. There's plenty of ideas! We got stuck on colours too. When we realized that any design can be done in any colour, it for way easier!

I think we will be doing some navy lace around the bouquets with some ribbon. I’m just not sure what to do for centre pieces. Got to look more plans for decor.

The only other place my bridesmaids dress colour will appear is in the bouquets, I wouldn’t worry too much about it. My cousin just did red and black for her wedding, the bridesmaids wore black and the table cloths were black and the groomsmen wore red and black. The groom is a fire fighter it was very fitting haha.

That sounds great! I wouldn't be to worried about the navy finding its way in to the rest of the decor. Ours are wearing mauve and we have no mauve elsewhere.

If you wanted you could always do some subtle navy around, like as an element in your centrepieces or navy ribbon around bouquets. Things like that.

Thanks for the reassurance, I’m just a little down this time of year and then I’m worried that I’m stressing about wedding colours. I just want to get as much done now as I can not worry. My groom will wear black and have the ties and pocket squares match the bridesmaid dress colour. I had to get him to make a firm decision as his sister will be getting a dress to be standing up on his side.

My bridesmaid dresses are navy blue. My groom is doing the super dark navy tuxedo with black lapels... aside from that there is no navy in the wedding....

It doesn't have to match anything else, as long as it coordinates. And red, black and navy are fine.

I second all of this! Having their dresses in the navy and working with all other colors they will tie in nicely!

Navy goes nicely with reds so I wouldn't worry about it. Plus you don't want everything in the exact same shades of your colours. They show up nicer in pictures when you have a bit of variation on the shades and tones (going up and down 1-2 shades of the colour). It let's that main hue you want pop more.

Oh. Definitely no flip flops then!!! Haha.
Muclucks will look beautiful on you!!!

Wow, I think that’s a great idea. It can get really expensive to be in a wedding, so that’s really thoughtful of you guys to do that!

If I were having a summer wedding I totally would get flip flops, comfy ones that is lol. But we are getting married in January and in Edmonton there is likely to be lots of snow so no flip flops. I personally won’t be wearing heals. I will likely wear my muckluks my mom made for me for the ceremony and pictures and change into running shoes after and go bare foot for dancing. I just want to make sure my bridesmaids are comfortable and that whatever we get doesn’t cost them too much. We are having a sort of stag and doe engagement party not to raise money for the wedding but to help the wedding party cover some of the cost of things to help out.

We all have felt stressed about the colour of the decor! Which is so funny, because most of us don’t remember the decor of other people’s wedding lol. I think you’re on the right track with everything. I was going to buy all the bridesmaids dresses off Etsy, now I’ll just have Jr bridesmaids (still getting the same dresses) it’s just way easier to buy online! Just Get all your girls red flip flops LOL.

I don’t think I can order it that way, and I will be going with the midnight navy. Bridesmaid dress shopping was a nightmare to say the least, but the girls found the style they liked and I was able to find similar styles online for cheaper which included custom sizing so less likely to be needing alterations.

Yes that’s what I was thinking getting a ribbon and having red in the bouquets. I guess I’m just stressed about how it will turn out and if it will look okay.

Thanks for the advice, I’m not sure why I feel stressed about the colour of the decor. We are also not having flowers as my fiancé is allergic and I don’t want to spend a lot on fake flowers and be stuck with them after. Bridesmaid dress shopping was a nightmare, and I don’t even want to think about shoe shopping for them lol. Luckily we are getting the dresses from online and they will be custom made so hopefully not too many alterations needed and are still cheaper than what we found at David’s bridal without having alterations. I have one of my made of honours that lives in a different province and so that’s why I opted for buying online so I don’t have to worry about matching colours between different stores.

As for colours, your combination sounds good.

Decor wise, you seem to have it simple and about the same way i had it based.

Beidesmaids dresses are up to you if choose to go red or blue. Just thinking of making the colour pop, ever thought going grey with red strap?

I personally LOVE red and navy together. The bridesmaids could wear red shoes and have a red bouquet to tie them in together? Plus if you really wanted, you could always throw small accents of navy in throughout the decor, but I don’t think it’s necessary.

I would just perhaps see about getting some red ribbons for their waists or perhaps have some red in the bouquets if there isn't already. Otherwise it sounds fine to me!

I originally was going to have tables with white linens on black table cloths and have red tied in with the centre pieces and was thinking about having red ties for the chairs. But with the change to Navy blue I’m wondering if I should be having a navy blue instead of the red. I do not think I want to go with black for a bridesmaid dress colour.

I think the bridesmaids dresses should compliment the decor but doesn’t need to match exactly. It’s your wedding you can do it however you want.

If you really want everything to match you could have the bridesmaids wear black dresses.
