Jessica, on March 14, 2017 at 09:46 Posted in Plan a wedding 0 10
Is it important to do save the date cards? Just trying to think ahead. Whats the point in doing them?

I also have out of town guests. That sounds good to reply with their current mailing address is a great idea. Thanks

We didn't send save the dates... I made up one for emailing but never got around to sending it... Agree that its not so important if guests are local.

I wanted to send them out because we have a lot of out of town people coming and this way people would know for sure they were invited (I had heard some of my cousins weren't sure if they were). We just created our own and sent them out via email. I also used them as an excuse to request that they reply with their current mailing address. This way I hope not to spend too much time tracking them down.

We did save the dates and invitations and they are both useful.

E-mailing the save the dates is by far the easiest way to get them to everyone at the same time. That is what we did. We found an online template and edited it and then sent it out as an attachement to a mass e-mail. The save the date gives people a heads up that you are getting married and would like them to attend. This way people can put you in their calendar if they have nothing else planned already or even shift things around so that they can attend. I agree with the others that it also helps out of town guests to start making preparations and plans. The only real information on a save the date is the fact that you guys are getting married and the date it is happening.

Invitations are what you use for all the details: location, time, date, RSVP date, meal choice etc. It is more formal and has more information than a save the date. The invitation is official compared to the save the date. I also see the invitation as the first little wedding favour you give your guests Smiley smile something they can keep if they want and remember your big day.

    I hope this helps!

Okay thank you. I just have a lot of family most of them on my moms side most of which are out of town. But thats why i was considering emailing the save the dates so they are aware well in advanced (once we find the venue and pick the date) and then mailing out the formal invitations later.

At first we thought there wasn't much point. But in the end, we decided to send them because we are only inviting 35 people and we really want them all to come so we wanted to make sure they had lots of notice. We just as easily could have emailed or called people, but it was pretty cheap to get 20 save the date magnets off vistaprint and they were really cute! Otherwise I agree with Kacy in that it's most important if you have out-of-town guests that need to plan more in advance.

No we are looking at venues tomo. We arent sending anything out yet until we have a place and date. Just trying to think ahead. And plan and save. We might have quite a bit of family out of town. I was thinking of doing a picture for the save the date according our theme and emailing them out and saving cost on postage for the invitations. But the fiance doesnt see a point in doing both the save the dates and invitations.

I don't the point myself for ours since we are only inviting local people and are trying to organize something nearby. I think it can be useful when you have lots of out-of-towners, or you are planning a destination wedding so that people can know the date and start saving up. Do you have a venue booked yet? The other thing to consider is that if you send save-the-dates before booking your venue, you may be stuck with that date in the event that your venue isn't available for that particular date... hope this helps! Smiley laugh
