Save the Date Timeframe

Abbie, on November 8, 2020 at 08:37 Posted in Plan a wedding 0 9
Hello all! We have decided on a bit of a longer engagement than we would have originally planned (summer 2022) due to Covid.

What timeline would you recommend for Save the Date send outs? A good portion of our guests are overseas so I’d like to give them as much notice as possible (of course I can always let them know over phone and follow up with official save the dates Smiley smile ) I’m also finding that everyone and their brother is asking me for the date already haha. With all the uncertainty in the world, I’m thinking a little more notice wouldn’t hurt but I don’t want to be too overzealous and send them out crazy early.
What are your thoughts? Smiley smile

I’d say one year for international guests (unless you’d rather just verbally tell them), and no earlier than 8 months out for local guests.

We had a nightmare with our save the dates - we sent them early (a year out) to both international and local guests and all of our older local guests were very confused - thought they’d missed the wedding, thought it was the actual invitation, etc.
So I really recommend only 8 months out for local guests.

That’s a good point! Maybe I’ll just verbally tell people once we book a date since everyone seems to want to know already 😊 thank you!

That’s what I’m thinking, too! My guests are in the UK so coming is a huge commitment for them. Thank you for the input! 😊

Thank you! A year seems to be the General consensus 😊 I’ll just have to tell people to be patient for now 😅

Save the Date for overseas guests a year beforehand seems fair to get their plans set and documents in order to ensure they can fly out to your wedding. Locals within U.S. and Canada about 7 months ahead so they can book it off and don't need as much time for their arrangements. The hotel reservation should be provided on the invitation itself.

My fiance and I had sent our save the dates a year in advance since all of our guests would be traveling to the province we're getting married in. That way they have enough time to sort things out as well as get accommodations ready and such. With covid, I think a little extra time for people to figure out if they want to travel is a good idea.

I'd do it June 2021 at the earliest but September is probably a safer bet. Save the dates are meant for people to make travel arrangements and I doubt anyone would book flights this far out with covid going on.
