Restrictions on backyard weddings this summer

Laura, on January 8, 2021 at 20:05 Posted in Plan a wedding 0 2

Hi everyone,

As I'm sure many of you are, we are figuring out what to do about our summer 2021 wedding!

We may be ditching our indoor venue (since chances are, we're not going to be able to have many guests) and instead thinking about having the ceremony and reception on my dad's property (he has a few acres). I can't remember what the rules were for social gatherings and weddings at private dwellings, but I do remember them being more strict than for businesses.

Is anyone else going this route, or did you happen to do the backyard thing last summer and can shed some light on how you made it successful? I'm holding out hope we are allowed 100 people outdoors by next summer and we can have something that resembles the wedding we were hoping for!

A backyard wedding can work with the maximum guest list to celebrate your day by setting up the whole area as your reception and placing an arch in front of the head table. Its best to double check at this time what further restrictions have been taking place. I hope all goes well for your day and memories are made as thought out.

You would actually end up lowering your gathering limit if you hold your wedding on an unstaffed facility like a private residence. Assuming Toronto is an Orange Zone in June (doubtful, as throughout the entire summer in 2020 we never went below 25 cases per week), indoor gatherings at staffed facilities like restaurants and banquet halls allow 50 people. But in a private gathering not held in a staffed facility, that count is actually 10 indoors and 25 max outdoors. And you're not allowed to combine gathering limits so if your family does anything inside, your count is automatically set at the indoor level.

On top of that, if you hold any gatherings at home then every single person that enters the property becomes part of the gathering count, including any vendors for your reception. Whereas if you held it in a staffed business, anyone working for the venue like wait staff and bartenders, would not count towards the gathering limit of 50 indoors.
