Registery opinions?

Alycia, on January 20, 2019 at 16:13 Posted in Plan a wedding 0 20

I’m not sure what to register for. Should I register for things, money registery or honeymoon? I am torn between these, we’re buying a house in 2019 and getting married in 2020 so we could use any of these, but I’m not sure what works best for people. Askin for money has always felt so impersonal to me, and not something everyone considers a gift, as new home owners I’m sure it would go to good use!

Any tips on this? What did you do?

We started our registry in August for our March wedding as I had a few people asking.

That’s a really good idea, when did you start your registry though? I’m not sure when to start. We might be buying or building a house over 2019 and the wedding for march 2020 so I’m confused on what I should do...

We did an online registry using myregistry but also mentioned we are doing house renovations so the ball was then in the guests court.

I’m going to do both I think, register for things we really want for those old school guests who wanna buy a gift and let people know we’re working on our new home so money would help us with that!

We had chosen monetary gifts as we already had everything and extras would be sitting in the corner piled up.

Registry is wise for what you really want and will use upon moving in the same year of getting married.

However, if your moving in a year before and going to have a housewarming party, then leave the registry and you will end up the same as i described. Monetary gifts are not bad because you could use it for home projects, honeymoon or a new goal to start that important to you both.

For us, we just need to have one put together before we send out the invitations - so roughly the 5 month mark - so we will start looking at stores in March (6 month mark). For you, I would say a month before you send out invitations which would be in August/September (unless you send out earlier or later).

House hunting was a killer for my friend - she ended up looking for a house for just over a year before finding one that her and her boyfriend liked aaaaaand won (I hate when the house has a bidding day...).

Great idea!!! I signed up with the bay when I was at the wedding show, to get into a draw, and I noticed it's endless endless options almost lol. I really like the idea of doing both, I think that's my new plan!

Good point, I like to plan ahead, so that doesn't come too naturally to me. So when is a good time to out together the registry if I'd do one, 3 months ahead? We'll be in our house by then for a good 3-6 months depending. We're still early in the house hunting game lol our plan is summer then the wedding in March.

We're in the same boat! We decided to go with some options. We are registering at Hudson's Bay (they have such a wide range of things and household items) OR people can give us cash gifts. At worst we could return items to the Bay as well. Then you're giving folks the option.

Similar to what me and my FH went through/ are going through. Don't worry too much though - you've got over a year before you even need to think about putting one together!!!

We got engaged in Dec. 2017, bought a house in 2018, and are getting married this year in 2019.

At first we thought we would want to ask for physical things to help make our house a home but now we have basically everything we would need because we needed it - so we got it.

I would wait to see closer to the day, I am thinking for us, we will put together a small registry but hope for money based on the fact the registry will be small. At the same time, things may change by the time we start looking into registries!

We are leaving it open for family. We have been living together for 3 years and have pretty much everything we need. I’m sure if I really wanted to do a registry I could upgrade some things, but I really don’t “ need” anything.
As Bianca said we are just not registering. I also hate asking for money. So anything we do get we will ge grateful for receiving and it will either go towards the wedding or the honeymoon

It really depends on your own situation.

Gifts of Money: There are many cute ways of letting your guests know what you will be using the money for, whether it's for a honeymoon, down payment, etc. If you have to travel long distances to your wedding location, you might not want to fly back with a bunch of boxes!

Traditional & Honeymoon Registry: Just make sure you have a large range of items/experiences of different price points, to make sure your guests can find something within their budget. It also makes writing your thank you card much easier. Couples are also able to add the option of getting gift cards to their go-to stores (Ikea, Crate & Barrel, Bed Bath & Beyond, Canadian Tired, Home Depot, Hudson's Bay).

For us, having lived together for over 6 years, we didn't see the point of asking for appliances or household items. Instead, we're asking for gifts of money to put towards a down payment on our first home. We also have to fly to our wedding location, so we wanted to keep things simple.

Since you've been living together for 10 years you could always register for "upgrades" of things you have. What kind of crowd are you inviting to your wedding? Will they get the message to just gift cash if you don't put a registry or will they take it into their own hands to find a physical gift for you?

Thanks! After we move in the house we might know better what we will need. We have so much as we've been living together almost 10 years just not in a whole house of our own! So I have no idea yet. Thanks for the advice, we were also just thinking of asking for money and get what we need that way.

If you go to a place like Bed, Bath, and Beyond, they're very helpful when doing your registry. I haven't been yet but made an appointment and just during that they had plenty of tips and whatnot.

FH and I will have been living together nearly 6 years by our August 2019 wedding, so we're just not registering since we want monetary gifts lol.
